Bill often notes that coins he's bidding on go for (too) strong money.
Is this one of them?? ![]()

That's a nice one!

No, I have that one in NGC AU-58, CAC, so I am out. Thank goodness I'm not bidding on it.
But if it were half that size, I would be bidding.
So much for gold coin prices going lower, lol.
Nice coin I wouldn't mind having though!
Looks like 62 quality to me....with the overall look and eye appeal of even a 63. There's a good reason it will bring strong money.
wonderful strike
some one really wants it! check out this comp...pretty darn nice too

Those are two really nice coins.
I'm thinking that if it was 62-63 in hand, CAC would have recognized that??
Better than MS-61?
I don't think that it's any better than this one so far as the grade goes, and this one is an MS-61.
This is also graded MS-61.
Here is Stacks' take on the coin shown above.
I like the GC coins a lot better than these other 61's. It has cleaner fields with a striking Cameo effect. The ogh + CAC doesn't hurt. CAC doesn't always put gold beans on coins that have solid upgrade potential. There are numerous instances of CAC green coins being upgraded and getting stickered again.
I'm guessing it's one of those coins that Ian took to a show or 2 and that there are some sight seen bidders.
The rest of us are evaluating it sight unseen.
Aside from buyer perhaps liking the coin, he/she otherwise would benefit from purchase if coin were to regrade as 63. There's a narrow spread between 61 and 62 and then there's a big price increase at 63.
Some nice gold coins here... I do see more differences in strike quality than preservation differences. Cheers, RickO
I've always regretted passing on a conservatively graded MS 65 even for the late 80's for 10K. at a Boston show. Recall a hammered strike and none graded higher at the time.
10K at the time was All-In.
My best 38 in a Gold PCGS Au 55 holder
Always remembering the MS 65 that I passed on it seemed that 1838 tended to be well struck. Of course those that I saw were just a small sample.
Talk about hammered strike is my 1834
