Three Dollar Gold

I was wondering what the group thinks of $3 gold? I like them and have a 56s and 68 in nice AU. Would consider building a set, but the "bloom" seems to come off most of these below 58 or 55 and they look kind of dull.

I like them, but don't have any right now. A little pricey for what they are, in my opinion. I almost bought one today though, lol.
Ironically, it's a pretty available "type" coin that has been doing nothing but dropping in price for 11 years. Maybe the better date stuff in nice VF/XF/AU grades has some potential.
I have couple of common dates in AU58 PCGS in my eloborated gold type set. The history behind the coin is interesting. It was made for easy buying of 100 stamps.

Yes the lower grades are not that great IMO.
Quiet pricey!

I also have a 1878 PCGS AU53 but I don't have any good photos of it.
Why not just try to put together a set for fun? Pick a grade and go for it. Might not fill all of the holes but a great challenge in the search. I picked a condition and am going for them. I haven't found one for my collection for a couple of years now. Once in a while, or often, I settle for a hole filler like an ex-jewelry piece because my patience wears thin.
The civil war dates, the 1858, 1860-s and the low-mintage(1,000 and below) have sky-rocketed in price. The common dates, in mint state, have plummeted in price.........They are one of the prettiest US coins when in high grade:

Very attractive gold coins. I have not collected this particular denomination.. Prices have seemed to be high, at least on the one's I looked at. They would make a nice set. Cheers, RickO
I like the color on the 1874.
I have 26 or so different like this one. A fun collection. Most are not this nice. I am not that patient so I settle for fillers like looped or plugged or ex-jewelry while waiting for a holed one to show up.
The Three Dollar Gold Piece and the Type II Gold Dollar have been the "key coins" in the 12 piece gold type set for years. Both have been over rated with respect to rarity. Neither coin is as scarce as some dealers have made them out to be. You learn that when you start going to the national shows and see loads of them available for type in many dealer's cases.
I like the Three Dollar Gold Coins, and own three right now. I might add a couple others, the 1854-O and San Francisco Mint piece in the future, but that would be it. Here is what I have now. Frankly I think that collecting the full set would start to feel overly repetitive.
1854 because the "THREE DOLLARS" is in smaller letters than it would be for the rest of the series.
1854-D - some call this "the king of Dahlonega coins" although there are several other coins that might have claims to the throne.
And my main type coin, an 1887

I love the design.
I used to have an 1861 in AU.

I like Three Dollar Gold. I think a complete set (minus 1870-s of course) is pretty doable. The single date from Dahlonega is probably the biggest financial challenge in the set but I already have that covered. Good idea, I may start a set.

Finally got a pair of these coins over the past few months, an 1856 in 58 (with CAC) and a '54 in 55, mostly to have as type. Though not cheap, they were way less in price than they were a few years back.

I sure wouldn't mind owning a couple of them one day.
