Summer FUN

The Summer FUN show starts today. I love coin shows and wish I could spend a day there.
The dealer list is missing most of the "big" names. Have we reached a show saturation point? Long Beach, Baltimore, now this.
Thoughts?
If you attend, please tell us about what you see.

Denver ANA is in 3 weeks. Some dealers could be gearing up for that and skipping summer Fun
Too many coin shows with the online realities, sagging economy and lack of fresh material.
Someone needs to tell the organizers to get a sign out there. I just drove by the convention center a short while ago and you would never know there was a coin show there.
Joe.
Baltimore was a few weeks ago and Denver is in a few weeks. Plus Orlando in Summer is too hot!
It only feels like 101 but it is only 93 degrees outside!
It sure is a hot and steamy week in Florida, that's for sure. Thank goodness of A/C!
A few years ago, Summer FUN was about half the size of Winter FUN. Two years ago they put it in a smaller space and it seems to be about 1/3 of the size of Winter FUN now. I remember the collective gasp and chatter at the opening of the show two years ago when everyone walked in and saw how the show had shrunk.

I was at Summer FUN for about 3 hours this morning; that's all it took to stroll the entire floor. There were a few larger out-of-state dealers there, but about half were local from Florida. People were buying and selling, but my guess is by Saturday the place will be a Ghost Town. I did manage to pick up some nice raw AU Barber Dimes and drop off a few coins with PCGS.
Will be there tomorrow AM ~ pick up an already purchased item and submission to turn in to PCGS. Perhaps there will still be something nice waiting to be discovered. JeffM is correct about Saturday. The January 2018 Winter FUN Show in Tampa should be a substantially different affair.
I was thinking of going, but passed due to lack of motivation to travel 450 miles at this time.

i was there wednesday and thursday.
A lot of major dealers were not there and bigger dealers with big checkbooks were few and far between.
There was a lot of talk about how bad the greysheet reporting has hurt the market recently with many disagreements on how it is being done and dealers afraid to buy coins as they can drop even further.
I almost never am able to walk the entire floor and see every dealer at a major show. In this show I was able to see every table.
There was about 10 Stella's on the floor including 6 at Larry Lee's Table.
I would love to have a coin show of that size in this area... Thanks for the early reports.. hope to see some more. Cheers, RickO
I have been laid up with a kidney stone and was unable to attend. There were a few pieces in the auction I would have bid upon had I been there, but I had to see them or get a Heritage review. It was too late for the review so I was out.
It soulds like the bourse was smaller than usual. Of course it only takes one right coin to make the show for me.
Deep statement! That is so true. If you find the right piece, then a show (no matter the size) is worth attending.
.
I think the fact that show so close to the Fourth of July holiday hurt it. Many dealers and customers were probably off with their families. I remember that the show was often the week after the holiday in the past.
The biggest reason I don't due the Summer FUN show is out of principle. They charge the same price as the winter show even though it's a day shorter and in the "off season"! My personal opinion is the bourse fees should be 2/3's of the cost of the Winter show. If the bourse fees were lowered I bet that would increase dealer attendance.
I attended today.
It was busier than I anticipated. I was hoping to have time to BS with some of my dealer friends, but everyone was relatively busy buying and selling, and dealers I spoke to indicated it was turning out better than the (low) expectations they had.
.
I am sure the expenses are high....BUT! 1 day less security,1 less day outrageous hall rental,...and the fact that a summer show does not bring the same attendance. I suspect the spiral has already started and the show might die. Why not reduce the Bourse fees and fill up the room? If it could gain some momentum I could see it competing with the ANA!
Glad you still like the quarter!
Randy Campbell was also missing due to back pain. Probably the first FUN show he has missed iin 39 years. Thursday was the best day. Looked like a busy show to me. Many dealers say it is tough to make money these days yet I have not heard anyone say the show was terrible or they are having a bad show.
What are they saying in general?
Can't blame the Grey sheet for falling prices .. my friend just lowered his buy prices on a declining market
He is returning from show Saturday morning ... Show was a dud ..taking a pass next year
Anybody else catch HA's "Signature Floor Session 3". I don't think there were any bidders in the room. They still managed to sell 146 items, totaling over a million dollars (includes buyer's premiums).

Some pretty weak prices in the series I was following!
my brother and I went to the inaugural Summer FUN...and it was fun. I'm a long way from FLA these days...
I will be creating a new thread to discuss some ideas and thoughts
