lkeigwin - haha thanks for the welcome! I started collecting when I was younger, first coin was a 1900-O Morgan from my grandfather. I love the Bust, Seated, Morgan, and Barber series, but I collect just about everything. Recently, I've been into proof Seated Liberty quarters. I bought a nicely toned PF65 one a few months ago and it got me hooked. I love the look of the older proof coins when they've got some colorful toning to them. This whole weekend I've ben practicing my photography skills, trying to figure out how to capture the colors, its quite a challenge!

It's almost impossible to capture that beautiful toning.

DIMEMAN - I'm noticing that. I've figured out how to take pictures of the Morgans with the brown/beige toning around the rim, but the rainbow toning on the Seated proofs is a beast to capture. It looks great in hand, but when you try to take a picture of it, the coins look lifeless. Is this true for all toned proofs? or just the Seated series? I've looked at coins online through various retailers and many of the toned proofs look lifeless.

Welcome to the forum! I have enough trouble photographing circulated coins, I don't have any idea how to capture the color of toned proofs.

If the proof coin is slabbed it can be a real PITA to get the colors to come through. If it is a raw coin it's pretty easy. Welcome to the forum.

Here's a few pictures. I still can't figure out how to photograph a slab and get the colors to come through on a proof, so apologies for the glary pics. I'll keep practicing. If anyone has any tips on how to photograph toned proofs through a slab, I'm all ears!

    1884 is PF64+ CAC
    1889 is PF65
1891 is PF65 (with a wonderful scratch in the slab)

Looks quite promising from my place.......been holding out on us it appears! :)

  • lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,894 ✭✭✭✭✭

Don't beat yourself up about imaging proof coins with color. Unless the coin is raw and you can use axial lighting or the like, you won't be able to get the spectacular colors off the surface. The slab reflection will always be in the way.

    Nice collecting choice!
    Lance.
