Hi, I'd like to sell my coin.
Yessir, may I see it, please?
Sure, here.
Oh sir, we don't buy these.
Why not?
Well, because you don't have a label saying you weren't stupid.
But last time you said I was stupid to have it graded by the wrong company.
Yessir, that was then.
So, I paid the "right" company to grade and authenticate it.
Bravo, sir!
So, why won't you buy this now that it's in the holder you told me would be best.
Like I said, sir, you don't have an "I wasn't stupid" label with it.
Well, that's sort of stupid, isn't it?
Not really sir. We want to buy coins from people who weren't stupid.
Are you saying I'm stupid?
Nossir, that isn't for us to say.
But if I pay someone to ....say... I'm not stupid, then you'll buy it?
For the time being, sir.![]()

Bottom line is the more things change, the more they stay the same....
Sort of reminds me of the efforts of Chico Marx selling racing tips at the track to Dr. quackenbush (Groucho Marx) in "A Day At The Races"... very funny for those of you who have not seen the film...
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Rollo nailed it!
Great read! Thanks for sharing that
I guess the OP likes the word stupid.
Bottom SCARY line is the more things change, the fewer people want to put up with it.

As I continue to watch the PCGS3000 index plummet, can't help but wonder if this is the reason.
@tradedollarnut that's like the post of the year right there man, couldn't stop laughing and agreeing.
I guess the graph updates soon. What's up with this?

It has to happen that every level of further NON ACQUISITION expenses will cut into activity.
That's an immutable law of business.
I can't think of anything that would be more difficult to explain to a neophyte than the ever increasing levels of essentially NOTHING conducive to getting more coins.
This madness is all about levels of ....supposed..... "protection."
....Like being "insurance poor."
There's always going to be a "great idea" for ....MARKETING.... but it's adding nothing to the ENJOYMENT of the hobby.
I'll leave it to you to predict what happens when .....enjoyment.... leaves an activity.

It's ok - she still cooks you dinner.
@tradedollarnut ...still laughing at that one......
It is true that innovations (read that TPG, FPG etc.) tend to sour the attitude of older collectors... however, for other segments of the collector/dealer population, they signal profit opportunities and, because many have not been in the hobby that long, often appear to be improvements. Much like new fangled contraptions like dish washers, all the fancy enhancements on automobiles and - of course - cell phones and computers, have become de rigueur in modern life, so it is with coin collecting. As someone once said, 'The only thing that remains the same, is change itself.'... So... it will go on, and some will leave the hobby...not many. Personally, I continue to enjoy coin collecting, perhaps partially because I do not sell coins, and also because I just enjoy the coin and buy only that which pleases me. Onward we go, into that bright, but unforeseeable future...Cheers, RickO
This is soooo true with varieties. The dealer would buy it for a non-variety and then turn around sell it as a variety.

When I was dealer, I'd buy anything if I liked it and the price was right. I even bought a couple of pieces in holder that shall not be mentioned because of past law suits. The only thing was I didn't want that holder in my case so I cracked out the token and coin and sold them raw.
The trouble is if it was raw or in "the wrong holder," you have figure what it what you can sell it for "as is," or figure out how much it is going to cost you to get in the "right holder" with some space left for grading company fussiness or mistakes. That means you can't pay as for something raw or something that is in a second level holder as you can for something in a top holder.
Sorry guys, but that's the way it has to work. Dealers have to make money to stay in business.
The only problem with that list is that in reality it gets compounded every decade with the excuses from all the previous ones.
In Canada................
2017, I'd like to sell my coin, "Sorry sir, we're not buying right now". (depressed Canadian market).
