1842 New Purchases

Personally I like pre-civil war gold...my favorite are coins that grade AU53/55...but that is not always possible given available inventory and budgetary constraints...

I just picked up this 1842 $10 Large Date from the recent Heritage auction...my research found that it was sold by DWN in 8/11...fresh from Europe and graded by PCGS in their Paris office...1842 eagles are split between Large and Small Date...the number of survivors of each is somewhat confused...but only 7 total of the Large Date have passed at CAC...the Philly mint coins tend to be under-appreciated...a similar date with a branch mint mark would sell for much more....but I'm not sure that demand for P dates will ever increase to change that equation...but it allowed me to pick up what I think is a super nice coin for not a lot of money...

As I stated earlier...I typically like AU coins...but with the 1842-O half eagle that is out of my price range...this one looks pretty good for a VF30...only an estimated 60 survivors...and for whatever reason they seem to come available even less frequently than the scarcer 1847-O...

That 1842-O $5 is a great coin. It spent some time in my collection.

Nice coin, and interesting to see such an early dated gold coin was in Europe until relatively recently.

Alot of pre '1933 gold coins are still coming out of Europe every year, still alot stored in Europe bank vaults so the experts say.

I was wondering about that...I'm honored to be the current custodian of one of your coins...I also see a couple of civil war half eagles up for auction that might have been yours at one time...
