Given the recent threads on the use of these buttons, do these buttons contribute to the forum? Or are they not constructive and should be removed?

Are objects like knives, hammers, and baseball bats useful?

    I agree with Lance.

Another question is what should be done when the buttons are abused?

I don't know. What should happen when someone violates

Rule 3) Anyone attacking another poster or making disparaging personal remarks will no longer be allowed to post. No more warnings.

half a dozen times a day?

There's a process in place for that to remove posting privileges which has been executed many times. In any particular case, we have to see what the mods will do.

While I think that the use of them can be petty, I think they might be effective if the poster has to unveil to post negative comments.. No more hiding behind the veil (avatar) and talking sh*t.

I've never used the Flag. The Disagree button is useful when I don't feel like typing up a dissenting post.

I think the disagree button is pretty silly. If you disagree why not just say so and explain your thoughts?

As for the flag, if it's used judiciously (like tagging spam or a truly abusive post) I figure it's fine.

Sadly, features like these are abused. The forum (and this country, for that matter) suffers from too much division.
    Lance.

Makes sense but a few new members and some here longer don't seem to have the knowledge needed about coins to actually form a dissenting opinion. Additionally, long-time members who do have the knowledge say they don't wish to explain their reason or they don't have the time.

I've already posted that IMO, anyone (including the 4 & 5 star members) who pushes the disagree button with out posting a reason would be "locked-out" of any other action on this site until the reason is posted! This is a mild remedy but would probably cost $$$,$$$ to program. :( In my country of origin, we just cut off hands.

While division is bad, honest debate is good. I read that things were not smooth founding his country.

I've never used the flag button, only disagreed once (and if you were the one who got it, you should feel special), but I do like the agree/like/lol buttons.

But at the end of the day, I don't really care. I existed on usenet and other forums for 20 years without needing them, but I do understand it's all about social media these days and just clicking a button is always easier than typing in a couple of words...

The buttons do make it easier to identify problems in the making. You can still report anonymously to the mods using the "abuse/report" button(s). The downside is a lot more posts without real opinions backed by "reasoning."

I believe the buttons have a use in today's internet socialization. I have never disagreed without posting a reason... in fact, I do not remember disagreeing... may have, just do not recall using it. The flag button has it's place....However, when anyone abuses any function, it becomes useless - at least when it is obvious that one person consistently applies it. Cheers, RickO

    @PerryHall

I believe you have a great deal to add to discussions. Care to post what you disagree with about my post. It takes no time at all. Copy the part and post it. If you don't wish for me to comment on what you post as a reason, say so and I will not. I have plenty of time to wait today as I'm not a father.

    HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL!

Never pushed any "button" regarding anyone's post here. I like it the way it is. Post what you want.

I have stated that when one disagrees it's usually a good idea to explain why. In this case it should be obvious why I disagreed---I'm against locking anyone out and I'm certainly against cutting off their hands.

Good point. I will not change my suggestion about the lock-out feature as it would foster the discussion and eliminate "fly-by" nothing useful, "Pot-shots."

In agreement with your "disagreement" I should award myself a" disagree" (if I could) for the "cut-off-the hands" joke. Can anyone disagree with the disagreement I should give myself for a disagreeable post? In my country of origin they cut off other things when there is disagreement or sometimes just for fun. I am very fortunate to be an American citizen in he land of the "free-for- now."

This makes me think of the old 1-10 rating system we had here. It was never decided if 1 or 10 was the best. Not many bothered to use it.

The goal of the warning is not to ban you next. It's to suggest you modify your posts. It's only if you don't change that the ban hammer comes down.

At first reading I thought you made a typo and wanted me to send you the money I was not spending at the bar. Then the light bulb went off. You probably won't feel that way when I grow on you. LOL, like a fungus, right?

Just post with common sense and follow the rules and you'll be okay.

Depends on how egregious you infraction is. If it's bad enough they just drop the ban hammer. No warnings or second chances.
