PCGS Crossover Results

skier07skier07 Posts: 4,794 ✭✭✭✭✭

All coins were previously in NGC holders. They were purchased anywhere from 5-10 years. None were in older NGC holders. First grade is NGC grade followed by PCGS grade. The 41 and 81-O eagles had CAC green beans. The 52-O and 59-D my minimum acceptable grades were 62 and 55. All others I requested they cross at any grade.

1852-O. $2.5 62 62
1862. $2.5 58 55
1841-C . $5 30 35
1858. $5 55 53
1859-D. $5 55 55
1841. $10 45 45
1842-O. $10 53 50
1853. $10 45 45
1881-O. $10 45 45

Overall I was happy with the grades. One coin went up and three went down. I expected the 1862 to drop a grade and I'm not really sure about the other two coins that dropped.

Overall very good results- I've had about the same experience with NGC crossovers.

    I love them Barber Halves.....

    Nice.

I wonder if anyone sends PCGS coins to NGC for crossover? I never have. I would love to see the numbers like PCGS shows.

I've heard they get downgrade about the same as the other way around...

Nice to see that you are pleased with the overall results...how long did it take? I have a crossover order that is on day 23...still "in process".

I dropped the coins off at hotel by PCGS and picked them up at Long Beach. Turn around time around 5 weeks.

Nicely done. It's a good gauge of where your grading skills are.

Perhaps, but for every 100 NGC coins sent to PCGS, I wonder how many go the other way. I would be surprised if it amounts to many at all. At shows you can ask for an upgrade to NGC from PCGS or it will stay in the PCGS holder. It's call Evaluation. After their nasty letter about PCGS, I imagine that no coins are going up a grade from PCGS to NGC any more!

I have on multiple occasions as I collect mostly world coins and have a few registry sets over there that don't exist over here. I'll buy a coin in either slab and leave it alone for the most part (or crack it if it's going into one of my type set albums--got quite the side eye from a dealer once when I informed him I was cracking a PCGS $10 Indian to put in my 7070), but there are some I do try and cross.

As a rough guide 70-80% cross at grade. I'll get some upgrades but notably more downgrades. If I had to put numbers on it without going back and seriously checking my records, 5% might upgrade, 10-15% downgrade by a point, and a few are DNC (I usually give a minimum grade of one point lower than what's on the PCGS slab).

Three of the DNCs were higher priced ones, so maybe they were being cautious looking through the plastic. At the moment I have one I'm debating a crackout just to see. On the other hand it's the highest graded at either service so monetarily it might be a dumb move.

Fortunately for the coins I collect the most there is no numerical price guide which is liberating. I'm generally looking to see what range it's in and how much I like it in that range.

@Wabbit2313 and @Stork I agree with that, I've heard that as many PCGS coins don't cross to NGC and as many don't cross at grade, as the other way around (e.g many coins from NGC don't cross to PCGS and many downgrade). I cannot fathom for the life of me why someone would cross PCGS to NGC, but I'm admittedly a PCGS-only collector (Even if I cross and NGC MS66 to PCGS MS63, which has happened).

@mercurydimeguy...I had a recent 40 drop to a 15 moving PCGS to NGC :D it happens--IMO it's in between the two, but is scarce enough the grade at these levels is almost irrelevant.

It's because of what I collect I suppose. NGC has been doing more of it longer, though I very much appreciate that PCGS is now slabbing things pre-Meiji for the Japanese coins. PCGS is definitely making some moves in the Japanese material.

It's also the OC in me. I like completing some sets that just don't exist as a PCGS registry. Back in the day both slabs were accepted ATS, so it was easier to 'buy the coin'. But now there is no sharing so I will cross if there is a specific slot I'm trying to fill in a set...there are plenty that remain happily intact in their PCGS slabs of course!
