Registry Sets

I was on the NGC Registry Set for about a year as they allowed both TPG coins to be used. It seems there is a battle that both grading agencies have turned into a fist fight.

As a collector I enjoy seeing other nice coins. The owners are proud and should be and showing them is appreciated.

That being said the collectors are the ones getting the shaft in the "our coins only" registry set as both TPGs have slabbed many very nice coins. When a good set is put together the collector is going to get coins already in either a PCGS or NGC holder and is not going to pay the price to cross a very expensive coin over just to be able to put it in a registry set.

The point is this new ours "only rule" keeps many nice sets from being shown, especially when some of the coins are very low pop pieces are concerned. I no longer pay much attention to either TPG registry sets because of the lack of the collector to show a coin just because of the grader. As far as I am concerned this rule is not doing a registry set any favors nor does it do anything for those who enjoy looking at a nice coin no matter who graded it.

To PCGS and NGC management go outside and fight it out on your own and let the collectors enjoy the hobby and stop this non sense of mandating only coins only be allowed that you have graded.

Well, got your dander up enough to start your own registry web site, with your rules or no rules? Go for it. I'd probably post to it.

You would think the ANA would be smart enough to that...

No, the ANA endorsed NGC so that's not going to happen until the endorsement ends, if then.

As for registries they represent the best coins from on grading service whose owner have decided to participate. That puts the claim "best set currently in existence" under a cloud.

I won the best complete gold type set award at NGC for one year. I was under no illusions. I knew I just got lucky and was able to sneak in under the better sets for one brief moment.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Seems like the harder you work the luckier you get. Congrats.

Completely agree, I have a nice type set but its PCGS and NGC coins..... hard to make a set without both companies plastic.... when I found I couldnt add NGC coins to the PCGS set, it felt like I just wasted a lot of my time uploading it. Sad.

I know there are great coins in both slabs, but as far as Registry's go I much prefer PCGS. The NGC version has a bad scoring system to me.

Also, I am glad PCGS does not allow other slabs in their sets. Although in the Showcases where there is no scoring it would be nice if you could use all slabs and even raw coins.........BUT IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!

Sad but true. It is a way a TPG is trying to get your coins in their slab. They wont win and its the people (collectors) that keep them in business and for that and other reasons it sucks harder than gravity.

I brought this subject to the ANA board
I spoke to the president and a board member about this very fact
Laura first talked to someone on the board before me so it is not a new idea!
