'The Wizard' Morgan

basetsbbasetsb Posts: 508 ✭✭✭✭

A fresh pickup today, while I put on my robe and wizard hat. It appears to have a triangle on the reverse as well. Crazy, what could have caused this?

An incredible coin, and very nice HQ photos. Looks more like an Orient rice hat to me

I saw that on Instagram and wanted it! Didn't even see that it was for sale. Either way it is one sweet coin. Also, I can't help you out on what may have caused this.

Very nice. If it were mine I'd call it "The conspiracy Theorist"

Just theorizing but if a triangle piece of paper or plastic etc was on top of it in an album for a long time undisturbed that would do it.

But there's another triangle on the reverse flip side

I was thinking maybe tape? Taped in an album and stored?

Most likely an "end of roll" toner where there was a gap in the paper

I like the 'end of roll' explanation.... except it would not hold up for the same pattern on the reverse... Cheers, RickO

    End roll toning.

PS: poorly wrapped with an old type wrapper that was not long enough.

    End roll toning

If it is end roll toning, then how did it get the triangle shape on both sides?

I was thinking about someone putting some kind spacer in between the coins being rolled, to prevent coin to coin contact marks, But why such a strange shape, And in that odd position? The triangle looks to be the same size on. Obv & rev. Strange for sure

Theory, the coin was AT'ed. The triangles are where rubber tongs were used to hold the coin. Would explain the triangle.

Don't think that's the case though.

That is a good theory, :hushed:

If that were so one triangle would be on the other side of the coin.

Yeah. The triangles don't line up for tongs

The reverse triangle is larger. It reaches the rim at all three points with both hypotenuses bisecting each side of the coin.

The shapes line up like this on the coin. Odd. An unimaginative guess is that the coin was stored with a couple of scraps of construction paper.

I don't know if I'd say one of a kind ... it might be more accurately described as one example of a type.

In fact, you might find this Morgan to be another example of this same type, as it appears to have a couple of triangles of its own "toned into" the obverse of the coin.

I didn't post a photo of the reverse, but if you want to see it, look HERE (BTW, I am NOT the seller and do not know the seller--I just innocently ran across this on the 'bay).

Ah, the good old Fourier Transform (long way) -- triangle function = sin c function squared ! The convolution approach is much simpler:

    Much easier than fractions.... :)
