ebay and personal coins
I've been pondering the thought of purchasing coins fron ebay, but have heard lots of stories of fake silver Morgan Dollars and similar instances. I tend to like Morgan Dollars, Barber Nickels (Liberty Nickels, V Nickels, etc.), Mercury Dimes, and Silver Pandas. Any recommendations on ebay dealers that sell good quality coins and silver for cheap? How do you know when to trust the seller or not? I would like to grow my collection and people have told me ebay was a good start.
Thanks,
SB Hawaii

"Good quality" and "cheap" don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. In my opinion, if you know what a coin should look like then there is very little chance of buying a bad coin on ebay. Conversely, if you don't know what a coin should look like then you likely shouldn't be buying the coin on ebay.

That question could incorporate volumes. And there no one answer. Like many will tell you, read and look at a lot of coins. If your just looking to pick up some common Morgan's, they are abundant and relativity inexpensive. If your concerned about fakes make sure the sellers have a return policy and you could always post a pic here. It all depends on your goals.

Bozarth is a good Ebay source.
I normally would just look for a private collector who gives up after decades of collecting. It is easy to tell when a seller sells the coin by the series and year, one list at a time while also buying and selling other household items.
But more importantly, pay close attention to buy it now with these private collection. Some estate coins are being mis-tagged. e.g Proof coin but only listed as uncirculated and flawless raw coins that were purchased straight from the mint.
I have bought on eBay since the day it opened. Only once did I end up with a counterfeit. If you are worried, only buy graded coins, and certainly only buy with a return privilege.
Ebay has protections for buyers that includes fakes. You get your money back as far as I know. Buy from sellers that sell a lot of coins, & have great feedback scores (read what the negatives say if they have any).
I like ebay as the choices far exceed those of my local dealers, or shows even. But, take your time and make a wish list and then shop with care.

You are possibly over-concerned about the chances of fake U.S. Silver coins. Yes they exist, but they are not commonly encountered. For protection and education, you can easily purchase a very good small electronic scale for about $20.00 and the information on proper coin weights can be found in recent editions of the Red Book.
Only buy graded coins from US based sellers and pay with paypal. If you do that, you shouldn't have any issues. eBay provides a lot of protection to buyers. I have never had an issue.
dealer for cheap.
if anyone has such a source, they'd never tell.
post the ebay pics after the coin is received and people can tell you if it is real. however, they will need to be good photos.
Stick to PCGS and NGC coins.
The advice above is good.... until you become skilled at grading and your series (or interests), it is best to purchase top tier TPG coins....Books, seminars and even this forum will help you. Also, the BST here is a source that I have been very happy with. Cheers, RickO
