I would live to find a roll of walkers!

  • ElmhurstElmhurst Posts: 795 ✭✭✭

I bought a roll of 44-P from my local dealer a few years ago, he got it as part of a collection he bought, and said it was that least ten years since he had seen another.

Had a roll about five years ago and have never seen another.

Very rare especially those that are 'honest uncs'.

Meaning that they are truly uncirculated and truly unfooled-with.

I have a roll of 1946-Ds that I bought in a Stack's or Coin Galleries auction, probably in the mid to late 70s. They are still sitting in a safe deposit box. I'm not very good at grading uncirculated walkers and even worse at taking pictures. This thread has inspired me to take another look at them and perhaps get a professional opinion.

They are not as scarce as people think. Most are in collections of us BABY BOOMERS and will start coming to market when we pass on the collections to our Children. I have 70 original rolls of Walkers, Standing Liberty, and Mercury Dimes collected in the late 50's! They were stockpiled at face value from banks and local merchants. I will never sell, but hopefully when sold the money makes the lives easier for the kids. Of the 70 rolls, 25 are Walkers. 12 different dates and mint marks. They include a 34S and 35S roll.

    Very cool!

Any of your kids/grandkids have ANY interest in numismatics? Not saying it's good or bad one way or the other...just asking.

Also, any change of a picture of the boodle lumped together? Would be cool to see!

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I've heard of rolls of later dates, and saw the remnants of a roll of 44S walkers ~20 years ago - it's where the one in my set came from.

    OK...that's pretty cool...especially the SLQs.

BTW, what does an "original" roll actually look like? I'm afraid I've never seen one (of those types anyway).

Not quite full, but a collection I am doing an appraisal on(actually just finished it) there are 17 1945-p's in paper roll, all original fresh. Id say the coins are mostly 64 with a couple of potential highers. Don't know if Ill get them yet, this family has money , so money does not intice to make em sell it.

How many rolls did McClaren have?

It's called The McClaren Collection. Hoard owner Gerald "Jerry" Forsythe is a spirited Midwestern entrepreneur whose investment portfolio has included everything from power plants and farmland to wine vineyards and automotive racing teams. But Jerry also collected coins, a lot of them!

Over the past 30 years, Jerry amassed hoards that include tens of thousands of Buffalo nickels, Walking Liberty half dollars and vintage silver dollars to name a few.

I would say that they are quite scarce these days. A lot of them went into the melt when the Hunt brothers manipulated the silver market in the late 70's and early 1980's. I know, I saw them go. Mercury dimes also. The silver value had way overridden the collector value. And most of us baby boomers or our parents sent them there. Smokeyjoe, you may be be one of the few that still has them.

I haven't but I sure they are out there. I found a $20 solid original1959D 50c roll at a bank back in the 90's. So the RO non-N are turning them in at the bank on occasion.

I'm sure a lot of junk silver went into melt in early 80s, but I doubt any unc walkers did...I can remember ones from the 40s selling for about the same prices they are now...somebody lost to inflation.

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,031 ✭✭✭✭✭

I haven't bought full rolls, though Dr. Appel used to advertise numismatics and I bought some nice partial rolls from him. Also recently bought a nearly full roll of Morgans, original, 99-os.

You are wrong. I was there, I saw them go. The silver value had risen so fast that collectors just let them go along with the mercury dimes. They made their profit. I would not have believed it myself if I did not experience it in person. I was not able to buy any of them or I would have. So many silver coins went through dealers hands in 1979-1980 that the coin dealers did not have the time to sort though much. They needed the turnover for the next day's transactions. The price had risen so fast that the dealers were getting afraid to hold onto anything for fear of a big price drop. Most dealers just took the profit.

At $50 per ounce or so, like it was in 1980, the total silver content is $18 on a half dollar. You would not have gotten the full $18, so were uncirculated Walkers worth more than $16-$17 in 1980? If not, then they probably were melted. I might add, some sell for less than that right now on eBay.
