Real dirty $3 gold, what would you guys grade it?

Now this is the definition of dirty gold! My buddy found this metal detecting the other day. Now, obviously there's a hole in it, and he hasn't cleaned the dirt off yet, but what would you guys grade it?

cool find...it won't grade, of course.
I don't think it would merit a grade.

I'm looking for a details grade not factoring in the hole, etc
I would grade it ...melt bucket.
Would it even get into a PCGS slab with "details"? Or would the hole prevent it?
XF remaining Details.
scrap heap.
they will holder it either 97 (environmental damage) or 98 (holed)
What a great find. Your buddy must have lost his mind when he dug that one out of the ground. XF.
EF sharpness, holed and scratched with environmental damage.
I won't melt it. It could be sold to a YN for melt, and he or she might enjoy it. There are only so many Three Dollar Gold Pieces left in the world. Lumps of gold are not rare.
I think you could just leave it as jewelry, since it has enough detail to be attractive. Someone has an ancestor with 1867 as a significant date.

Looks like XF details, along with a very cool find. That would be a cool coin pendant for someone to wear after some minor cleanup.
Wow, some posts here sure do throw some sour/bitter taste on a neat metal detecting find.

There are too many other issues with the surfaces to make that a viable investment.
Just polish it and sell as jewelry
Finding that was very cool. It should not be slabbed. That is like taking out of one coffin and putting it in another. Hang that sucker where it can see the light of day fora while.
When I did a little bit of auction cataloging work many years ago, I would have described the coin as "Rare date, especially in this quality." Which helps explain why I did not last long as an auction cataloger.

Tell your buddy that if he finds any other coins, he should NOT do to them what he did to this coin!
What did he do to it? He dug it and hasn't cleaned it yet. Can't tell him not to take home a gold coin if he finds another one!
A nice find! I give it XF details. Polish it a little and wear it with pride!
A better date, I pay well over melt for holed threes. PM is welcome from anyone having one or more.
That's a great find
XF40/45 details
Wow! (As to the find.)
Outstanding MD find.... a gold coin is the grail of MD'rs..... looks to be about a 40, not counting the hole... not worth sending in... I would get a 'self slab' to protect it and keep it. What a thrill to see that come out of the ground....Cheers, RickO
Great find!

yes, it would make a cool charm.
XF, and nice find indeed.
What a find!
Let me know if he decides to sell it
Its beautiful in its own way
Thanks for the comments everyone!
@CaptHenway - still waiting for a reply. The only thing he's done is find it metal detecting. He didn't rub it, he didn't polish it, he didn't even clean the dirt off of it yet, and certainly didn't put the hole or ring in it. So, I have no idea what to tell him that he did wrong. Maybe you want him to take a better picture? Please clarify.
Sure looks like it has been scrubbed with a harsh abrasive. If he says he did nothing to it after he dug it up I will take his word for it.
I saw it in person last night. Still has the dirt in the crevices (just like the photos). Should help prove it wasn't scrubbed.
