You press with your finger nail on the B in Columbia and it pops open, then the door slides over a little and then it opens the rest of the way.

Nice item. Apparently many people met their future mates while attending the Columbian Exposition in 1893 so souvenir items such as this make a lot of sense. One of my Great Grandfathers, a recent immigrant from Sweden, met his future spouse, my Great Grandmother, at the Columbian Expo. She was of Swedish decent and lived in the Pekin, Illinois area at the time.

    All glory is fleeting.

Very nice item... Is the individual in the picture identified? The portrait of Chris on the front looks as if he was just goosed.... :D Cheers, RickO

That is a nice item, even without the "box dollar" aspect to it.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

So when you apply the release mechanisms the cover does not spring open like grand dad's old pocket watch?

Very cool.... Years ago I was the underbidder on a 1878 Trade dollar that was similar in design.... Have kicked myself over it numerous times since.

    Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,
