I have had about as good of luck at pawn shops as at antique stores - some have everything in their small asortment over-priced, some have a few bargains, and some have no coins at all. I do not check many out, as I usually will find some junk to buy....

Pawns know the value of what they sell or they would not have bought it.

I do pretty good at places like this in my area. They are just charging by weight, so that leaves a lot of AU/XF coins in the melt box that still have some numismatic value. I find a few UNCs from time to time as well! Good luck!

Bargains can be found at pawn/antique shops... however, more often, you will find overpriced items that are low range quality. As for 'We buy gold' operations... I have never heard of bargains at such places. They are there to fleece those who are looking to convert property to cash and employ every trick in the book...Be careful... Cheers, RickO

In my area most pawn shops will not sell gold or silver to walk-ins. They have their people who buy all of the coins they take in.

Look at all coins. Don't just assume they are all garbage. When you done looking THEN ask if they have any coins for sale. Don't let them know what your looking for unless you can't find it on your own. If you do find something great keep your poker face hidden. Don't show emotions the "I want it" it kills the deal.
    Happy hunting, Joe

Only luck i've ever had was I offered to buy all of a guys 90% at 1x over the going rate as there was some older coins in the lot (worn out barbers, and a few seated coins, all quarters and dimes) I bought 30.00 + dollars face and when I got it home I was going through some of it and one of the seated quarters was a little small .... Found the first 20 cent piece I ever owned that day, it was VG-F.... the rest of the stuff was silver and that was about it.

    Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,

I've only been able to about break even with their stuff, though there sure are a lot of losers there, be careful. Plus they pay peanuts for what they buy.

To me and JMO, "** pawn shop** " and "deal" are mutually exclusive

Some of these are basically fronts that take in, bulk it to a sorting / refinery operation. They know there is better stuff in the pile, but the people they hire do not have the smarts or the authority to let some outsider in to paw through the stuff.

The other issue is that some of it MAY be stolen, once the cert numbers are checked. Easier to ship it off to the DARK LAGOON when those slabs will vanish, and if it is a good enough coin, be resubmitted.

As others have said, they buy super cheap, make money on the bulk silver / gold and any "good" stuff they find is the gravy.
