Counterfiet American Silver Eagle.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

We just came across our first ever counterfeit ASE, a 1995 dated example. The weight is off at 32gr. and the "ring" is a dull thud. Other than that it looks like the Real-McCoy.

Tom, I was surprised that it took this long for one to show up. we have a box of fakes, I think the most common are Seated Dollars and the common of those is dated 1845.

    @UnclePennyBags
    Good to know.
Was it in the plastic case?
Could be the pics but it looks thin, what was the weight.
    Thanks for the info

I have a couple of those that a local collector gave to me for my counterfeit presentations. I also posted pictures of a counterfeit 2016 Proof Silver Eagle last year that was housed in a genuine box and papers.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

It's crazy what counterfeiters will try. I even saw a proof dated 2009! (A non proof year)

obvious fake even from your pics. The W mintmark is normal for ASE proofs. Your linked site does point out it is silver plated. Unfortunately a reseller on ebay will not. 2000 is a popular year for the chinese ASE counterfeiters.

edited to add: my bad, 2000 was one of the few P mint marks.

Still hoping to see Keets' pics of the '95. I'm thinking the .9 g underweight could be a problem with his scale. Hope he'll also specify proof or business strike.

The W mint mark is not normal for a 2000 and while obvious as a single coin when someone throws it in a batch of 100 coins it can quickly get missed.... that site is selling these silver plated coins for $1 so people can try and trick others by saying .999 fine silver

I did not realize counterfeit ASE's were so prevalent.... What next? Counterfeit AGE's? Makes one very cautious.. and of course those new to collecting will suffer the most.... Cheers, RickO

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

counterfeit AGE's have already been documented, I believe CW had an article about a year ago and there was alert posted here.

Thanks Al, guess I missed that... Must have been off working somewhere... Of course I am not really surprised that it has been done.... Next will be a 1933 St. Gaudens... :D Cheers, RickO

If it had a DC mint mark you should have snagged it!
