Does CAC image coins that pass?

With the issues currently seen of coins being gassed and altered, it would be a good move to have an image database that matches the cert. number.

I don't believe so...they do record certification numbers though.

    No, they don't.
I don't think it should be up to them either. They have their business model which is exactly that...a business model....I don't think that imaging is something they would want as, as many of us know, it can be hard doing proper imaging in with a coin surrounded by plastic (just ask Phil Arnold who does the truviews...and why it is raw coins that he does)....and then, I am sure, people would want the pics to be shown with each look up and people would complain about the quality, etc etc etc.

Doing pics would be a no-win situation for them.

They do not have to stand behind the warranty anyway. If someone alters the coin inside, it is a PCGS or NGC problem.

    PCGS allows no problems. ;)

Since I've never seen a CAC after certified coin pic just graded, posted under the CAC logo, I'll go with no.

For those responding about whether CAC should photograph coins for customers, I'm reading the OP's question as whether they photograph them for themselves to serve as proof if a coin is altered. In such a case, the photos wouldn't need to be of particularly great quality as they would just need to show whether or not the coin became impaired after being CAC'd.

I think the TPG services should be imaging every coin that comes through their door. They have the chance to photograph them raw and can document the exact condition that they arrived in before being entombed. This would go a long way against people who alter the coins after the fact.

In fact, I think it would allow them to get out of their guarantee's if they could demonstrate that a coin had been altered after they certified it. Any potential buyer could protect themselves by checking the cert number and comparing the catalog photo to the actual coin in hand. They can then determine if the coin had been altered and pass on it, leaving the doctor with a bad egg.

I believe the time to image them wb cost prohibitive for them and impractical.

Then there is the issue of the coin going bad in the holder.....their looking at the coin at a point in time. If the coin goes bad in the holder somewhere in the future, anybody who knows how to look at coins is going to know its a piece of garbage - gold sticker, green whatever.

Yes. But until SP becomes the standard and not just a small fraction of all submissions (and one that can be bypassed with a subsequent non-SP submission) it really doesn't work well.

The SP digital fingerprint may serve a purpose in some cases. I suspect that PCGS's recent decision to True View all SP submissions is due, in part, to the poor visual quality of the fingerprint.

That would be another purpose that would be served by computer grading - a digital record of both surfaces....the case for computer grading continues to grow.... The cost to develop the system is still prohibitive...... That being said, it will happen. Cheers, RickO
