Ordered a trime and this is how it showed up.
Yep, scotch taped to a blank piece of paper. Also, the $6.65 for shipping made me laugh.

Acetone will remove any tape residue without removing the beautiful crust.

Why they would use a flat rate box? Prolly same reason they taped the coin: Lazy.
On the other hand, I just received a lot of Mexico coins, loose in the envelope, about 40 coins rattling around for all to hear. I almost wish those were taped.

When I was 5 (back in 1964) that's the way I first collected coins, by scotch taping them in a loose leaf notebook.

The packing method is certainly unorthodox, but using Priority service is not impractical if it means limiting the amount of time/risk while in the mail circuit. You're fortunate that the sender didn't just leave it at mailing the # 10 envelope with stamps on it.

The only way to send a # 10 envelope w/tracking is to re-inforce it to be too rigid to bend, which would make it require package rate of at least $2.67, or to send it certified which is almost as much as the way it was shipped.

I've received eBay coins packaged like this (though in a first class envelope), however, they have just been junk silver.
About five years ago, a Tucson dealer tried to sell me a raw Dahlonega half eagle (ChVF details), with what I thought was tape residue on one side. I wondered what it might have taped to, and didn't consider that it might have been sent in the mail after being taped to a piece of paper.

Priority small box through eBay is less than what he paid for that envelope. ($6.45)
Could have been a friend selling of some estate coins. Probably figured it was circulated anyway....
Glad it was unaffected by the tape.
Shipping right takes a while, many people don't have a clue.

All of the Priority Flat Rate envelopes except the padded large envelope are less expensive than the Small Flat Rate box when an eBay shipping label is used. The shipper for the OP paid the full retail rate at a service counter. I believe that discount rates are available even at an APC.

I have had several coin mailed to me like that over the years. Never even bothered me. If it was just loose and rattling around in the package that would upset me. This, not. Tape does not harm coins as long as you don't let the residue stay for any length of time. Acetone is well used at my house. All my raw coins get a nice bath as I have no idea who's fingers or whatever was on the coin when sent. Acetone only targets organics like body oils and such and will not harm a coin. After the bath I don't have to worry about a print showing up after it's been slabbed!
