I bought a mostly complete set of raw Lincolns at an estate auction for a ridiculously cheap price. The coins were in old Whitman folders. All the auction lots are sealed in a tight plastic bag which makes viewing quite difficult, so I was uncertain if the coin was a VDB. If it wasn't a VDB I'd have at least a 1909-S.
There also happened to be a major show in town. I showed the coin to three different dealers. One random dealer offered to buy the coin but said it wouldn't grade. The second dealer, who is an expert in pennies, told me the coin was a fake. And the third dealer, another expert in pennies who happened to talking to the second dealer, told me it was the real deal and it would grade.
I decided to submit the coin to our host.

Don't see why it wouldn't grade. Looks around AU 53-55. Nice pick up...

Your coin is as real as they get. Of course you know that because it's in a holder. It looks like a Die #3. Early San Francisco Lincolns came with that "wood grain" look. It's probably an XF-40 or better.

Which is unfortunate. I've always loved that look. To me it says authenticity not VF-30.

I'm very happy to finally own a 1909-S VDB. Since I was a little kid going through rolls of coins it's a coin I've always wanted to have. Perhaps the coin is under graded. But the photos accurately portray the coin and I'm happy it was graded.
I have a 14-D that looks good and a 31-S that's horrible from this same lot. There's no 55 DDO or 22. I haven't gotten around to taking pictures yet, but I'll post them later.

HAPPY COLLECTING
Strong EF obverse, except for big hit on jaw, and some funky stuff in the fields. Boxy S and mintmark placement make me think it's genuine. The reverse brings the coin down, gradewise. Wheat stalks are complete, but you see a lot of wear. Ditto with the O in ONE.
You could quibble whether it's a 30 or 35, but I think the 30 is reasonable.
