Pretty saint came into the shop the other day

I haven't seen many high end saints in person, so this might not be interesting to those who have. But it was the prettiest saint I'd seen in hand in my 40+ years. Unfortunately there was a big dig/bag mark/delam on the reverse...

Is there anyway to get pcgs to grade just the front and not consider the back? if so your's looks like it's an MS68.

The flaw on reverse must be extremely hideous if you won't post an image of it.

There is usauly a reason raw coins in that price range are still raw.

I know you're going to tell me it is the best luster you have seen in 40 years, and no doubt it is a quick cell phone image. But they take good images these days. The old school in me doesn't get impressed unless I see both sides, clean, and loaded with luster which I'm not seeing.
Well there you go. 40 years into this hobby and I'm not so jaded that I can no longer appreciate the elegance of one of the most beautiful works by one of America's greatest sculptors, struck in gold no less. Hope I never get to be that way.
For those who don't have stacks of 66 and 67 saints lying around their bedroom and under their couch cushions, here she is blown up 600% of life size (you can click on the image to get her closer to 1000%)...

If you're going to hype it and put your 40 years on the line whatever that is supposed to mean. Show us what the heck you're talking about. Since. You want to name call, All I'm seeing is a dull lifeless one sided hunk of bullion. That you say is damaged on th reverse.... not shown btw.

A well known big time PCGS submitter once told me
"backs don't count for much of the grade"
I'm not well known big shot but the reverse might not raise the grade but sure can lower the grade. In my jaded opinion.
Of course if damaged that changes the ballgame

I think the OP just wanted to post a picture of a good looking coin, which this is. Probably didnt think there would be any tire kicking, and such.

The rich golden honey color, smooth everywhere, is worth the grade bump from 67 to 68. I can't imagine that reverse matters that terribly much.
Reverses typically only carry a 30-40% calculus in the grade but a big gash or a lot of minor ticks will drop it a point or two
A reverse will never take a coin up, put it will take it down!

don't pile on Weiss, the OP, he only said it was one of the nicest he's seen. abcd whatever is the one who brought up MS68, which the coin certainly is not even from the obverse only. I think we should pounce on him if we need to pounce.
as for what the venerable stman said, it is what I have always understood about grading --- the reverse might not raise the grade, but it can certainly lower it. I thought that was common knowledge.

The reserve you exercised in not buying it solely by the obverse speaks of immense strength of character.
The classic Capital holder only adds to the mystique.
And that speaks eloquently to the tragedy of coinism.
It looks like exactly what the OP said. A very nice obverse. The image does not have any direct light on it, it's all ambient and reflected light which is why there appears to be a lack of luster. From the way I read the image, I'd be willing to bet the luster is all there as the OP implies.
Point to a single blemish that makes this less than ultra 68 (not 69. not 70. 68)?
I do love gold coins.... and the St. Gaudens is a beautiful work of art..... I have not heard of Saints delaminating... I suppose it would be possible with a major contaminant in the gold. Anyway, with a major hit, it should reduce the price to melt... and that I would consider a stacking bargain. Cheers, RickO
I know right. As blasphemous as this might sound when he mentioned the damage on the reverse I was wondering if I could purchase it for a couple hundred above spot. I am still looking for a nice looking Saint or UHR that I can handle, show the kids, etc... and not worry about it's value.

No, considering you can get a slabbed 65 for about 300 bucks more these days. I suppose they have gone up a bit with the recent run-up in gold prices however.

with the reverse not even being visible I would point you to the PCGS pop report. to date there have been 795,641 Type 3 Saints graded by our host, with only three coins graded MS68. I don't think this coin is number four.

Btw, since the OP felt a need to come after me personally, with this 40 years in the hobby I would think you should be able to tell the difference between a gouge what you called it somewhere else. Or a bag mark and more so a delamination. But that's just me.
Still a hunk of bullion is all with someone showing us a one sided thing flat on luster and knock someone that he can't convince it's a 66 or 67. Must be a politician.
