PCGS Turn around time....

dmwestdmwest Posts: 959 ✭✭✭✭

I sent 24 coins to be graded back in Feb. They received them on 3/1, but didn't log it until 3/7. The original estimate for my economy submission was 20 days, now it's 28. I guess they still technically have a few more business days, but I'm moving soon(next week). I hope they allow me to change the address.
Any of you notice a change in Regular or Express submissions?

Don't quote me on that.

__Just got an economy back today from Christmas_ _Like 100 days ? Seriously ? I find that unacceptable and I would send a letter saying so with the documentation of your order.

Still worth it. Coins should be sumbitted in groups of twenty so you get a blue box (if they're still available. They sell-out quickly I'd imagine).

    That's optional. (Up to you.)

I always hope for the best, but if you publish the estimated turn around times, you should be close. 20 days shouldn't turn into 3 months as @jdimmick experienced....I know its "just an estimate" but estimates shouldn't be off by months.....

Anything over 4 coins gets a blue box. I always send 5 or more.

Nothing makes sense with turnaround times. Sent one submission logged in at PCGS on 3-14, Modern Issues tier, still waiting on that one with only 4 coins in the submission. Sent another "Modern Issues" submission with 12 coins logged in by PCGS on 3-21, a week later, which I received back over a week ago. Not a clue.

There are many astute collectors informing others to get their cherries graded and those others are listening and following that logical advise. PCGS is busy because of it.

Just got a Modern tier back in a little under a month, which is about right, maybe a few days quicker than expected.

Also got an Economy back from two months ago. Just under two months has been about the average for Economy submissions in the past year now. Regular tier submissions usually take a month to a month and a half.

My first submission was modern with 17 coins. Received on 3/6, shipped on 3/10. My second modern submission arrived 3/27 and is still in the works.

Sadly, I think the second one is going to take an extra long time to balance how crazy fast the first submission was done.

Well, they update times every week, but that's for NEW submissions going out the day (or week for this matter) of. I have had subs earlier this year that are the same tier take longer than the ones I submit a few weeks after them. There is no "first come first serve" at pcgs, it's however they're grabbed, which is pretty stupid IMO...

My longest turnaround was approx 65 business days (3 months and 1 week on the calendar) for an Economy Raw submission (5 Lincolns for raw grading), which was between Dec 2016 and March 2017.

As I recall, at the time, Economy Raw Turnaround was estimated by PCGS to be 29 biz days.

The odd thing was I saw people post on the CU Forum their Ecomomy Raw subs at the time were taking 20-25 days (some less than 20) -- so some subs seem to finish faster and some much slower than advertised times.

It doesn't appear to me to be "First In, First Out" system with submission orders -- which makes the posted estimated turnaround times somewhat useless to use as a guide.

The only thing I think you can say is your sub will most likely be done within 4 calendar months (that appears to be the outside limit) but might be much faster 1 calendar month or less. Whether it's faster or slower than "normal" (i.e. advertised) seems to be pure chance (random).

Maybe it would be better to think of those advertised turnaround approximations as "average times". That is, for a given service level, 1 sub might finish in 5 biz days, 1 sub might finish in 10 biz days, 30 subs might finish in 28 biz days, and 1 sub might finish in 70 biz days. Whether you get the 5 biz day sub or the 70 biz day sub is just random luck of the draw.

At least you have the patience to wait for the charge to show before you look. I may or may not be guilty of checking multiple times a day to see if grades have posted.

Has anyone from PCGS ever provided any kind of information whether or not there is an actual queue and what factors might influence it?

Type of membership? Declared value of contents? Number of coins? Submissions with problems? Type of coins within each submission tier? Certain tiers only on certain days? etc.?

The grades post the second that charge hits, never before. It also works the same at shows.

Nope, and from all of our gathered information, there is NO "first in, first out" system, or any logical queue.

Update - after these comments yesterday I got the credit card text saying they had charged my card for my economy order. Grades were not as good as I liked, I'm still new at this and since I've joined this forum I'm am better educated than when I submitted this set. I'll post some pics and GTG once I get the coins.....

I don't have a problem with recent turnaround times. But what really grinds my gears is the 3 days it spends in limbo, you get 1 before it goes into "pending" and then it hangs out there for 2 days before the clock even starts. That is a good chunk of time for an express order. This is just a 1 coin submission!

My 5 coin crossover (all 5 gold coins, various denoms and series, 4 are pre-'33), regular tier, which was logged in on 4/6, had grades just pop in the last half hour. 15 business days is pretty damn good, IMO, based on past turnaround times for me. What made it all the better, was that I went 5/5 crossing them at-grade, even though on 2 of them, I had lowered the acceptable grade by 1 and 2 points (still getting my feet wet with gold, and didn't want them coming back in the original plastic), as the 1-2 point drop wouldn't have affected pricing hardly at all, not to mention the obvious....I wanted them all in our hosts plastic. Shoulda been collecting gold sooner (watch, I'll get boned on the submission I just sent in yesterday!)!! Thanks for the quick turn-around, PCGS!

    I'll come up with something.

Can't say as I currently have any complaints. My 2 coin regular submission, with imaging, was received on 3/30 and shipped 4/26. Including a couple of week-ends, that is just about right on for listed turnaround time.

I have a regular submission (Membership 8 free) that was logged in on 3/13 for some coins I purchased the beginning of last year (In between jobs so these are my newest acquisitions). They will be photographed and some of them are GSA. Right now, they are still 8 lottery tickets with potential!!

I have received a blue box on an order that had as few as 5 coins.
Not sure if there is an official cutoff for getting a blue box or if it's somewhat random.

From what I understand, orders of 4 coins or less, get safe-t-mailers while orders of 5 coins or more get a blue box.
Or maybe its 6 coins or more?

At anyrate, I have a bunch of blue boxes which we used to be able to sell but given the postage costs (medium flat rate) these are more of a pain in the but to sell.
