Have you ever downgraded a coin in your collection...

To one that you like equally as much, but since it's at a lower grade, you can sell the higher graded one, keep the lower graded one (you like equally as much), and get the ability to put nearly $3k back in your pocket to buy other coins?
Weird question...I'm sure someone out there has had to deal with this dilemma. What did you do?

Yes.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Last week, actually. I like registries but I'm not very caught up in them. I sold a higher graded coin because I had a lower one I liked better.
I've done this many times.
Lance.
No, but that would be the mark of a skilled and wise collector.
Yep. A CC 20c piece in AU and got rid of a proof 20c with a spot that bothered me.
No. I have only done these two things:
We'll use MS 65, as an example....
Purchased a MS 65 that I didn't like and then paid more $$ for a MS 65 that I did like and sold the old one. This is called a 'sideways' trade or upgrade.
Passed on a MS 66 that I didn't like and purchased a MS 65 that I did like for equal or even more money.
So, similar examples but I have just one rule.......I never downgrade, once I have the coin. But I do look for better examples in same or better grade.

Yes. I had a Roanoke commemorative half dollar that was in MS-65 that I downgraded to MS-64 because the MS-64 was better.
I replaced a PR67 with a PR64DCAM.
No. I don't think I'd do that.
I have sold an NGC slab in a certain grade with no qualms because I had purchased a PCGS slab of the same grade afterwards.
Insert witicism here. [ xxx ]
I have done this a few times in the past, but not for the same reasons. I actually downgraded because although technically the higher graded coin might be better, but the eye appeal and the overall appearance just fit my set better.
Yes, for years I kept a lower grade common date Morgan in my registry set because it was the prettiest darn thing one could ask for.
Yes, quite a few times.

Yes, based on superior eye appeal of the 'lower grade' coin.
Replaced a near six figure coin with a hole in my collection. One day I'll find a gem AU if it exists
Latin American Collection
Certainly. I replaced an untoned 1930 DDO #6 in 66 with an example in 62 because of great color and sold the 66 a few months ago.
Like Keets I have often downgraded from cameos to deep cameos. I prefer more contrast over the numerical grade.

I sent in an MS-69 Plat that I didn't like and it came back MS-66. Needless to say, I'll never do business with that dealer again.
I knew it would happen.
I crossed an NGC 61 to a PCGS 58 to go in my Registry Set. I was very happy.
I downgrade for deeper mirrored Morgans.
I downgraded an 85cc Morgan in 64+ to a raw F, and very happy about it
Got that everyman set going it sounds like @golden

I have downgraded a few times, but not on purpose. Cracked a nice coin only to get whacked by a cranky grader. I also learned years ago, DO NOT crack an old holder DMPL, no matter who graded it. Fatty, Rattler, and the worst of them all, OGH. So many are PL at best.
Unless you like it less, it's only really a downgrade in the opinion of the TPG and perhaps a few others.
From another angle, I've also tried to upgrade a coin in a registry slot only to look through dozens of coins that I don't like as much as the one I already have.
Also, I've looked at many of the top-rated Peace dollar sets and while some contain highly graded coins, they aren't always very nice coins for the assigned grade.
Yes, dumped a PCGS 62 large cent for a PCGS 58 on one occasion, and a PCGS 62 large cent for a PCGS 55 on another.

Never downgraded for my sets, but retained lower grade coins that I already owned, while selling new better coins because I couldn't resist the profit.
Yes.
When the 66 was yuck and the 64 was wow.

I've done it.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
I have cracked open some ms & pr 70 ASE just to put them back to OGP for my daughters' collections. Does it count as downgraded?
