According to Dr. James Wiles: " the doubling is the result of machine damage doubling on incuse design elements. It is not a doubled die." Thanks for all the input and comments!! The Doubling is still fantastic!!!

I'm not sure how this happened but it is an extremely nice Doubled die in my opinion. I have found different stages and varying degrees of doubling. The 7 in 2017 in doubled nicely along with the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM. Opinions on how this happens with the new minting process are appreciated! Enjoy!

    Nice find!

I'm wondering if it could be a large date over a smaller date or something along this thought?

That is quite interesting... I'll have to start searching for them.
To me it looks like a small E under a large one.

    Clear doubling.

I thought modern production methods prevented this sort of thing. What gives?

Cool and wow. Along with the doubling, that 7 reminds me somewhat of the 1847 over small 7 large cent.

So I've been taking more pictures and studying the coin further. I have now found it to be doubled on the upper letters as well as the date and E of the Motto. First I'm going to post a pic of the coin since no one has probably seen one. Then I will post pics of the doubling. I used about 5 different coins to get the pics because I discovered multiple examples that are not quite the same. Please forgive my multiple posts to get them all up!

First, I think it is some type of large letters and numbers over small letters/numbers. I see on top doubled letters but they are smaller in size. It is most definitely Doubled die of some sort. There are notches and clear split serifs. The first pic is NDS of MOUNDS on the top of the coin. The arrows point to the doubling. ONLY where the arrows are pointed is the smaller letter doubling.

Pic 2 also shows remnants of the small letters

Pic 3 shows the same while pic 4 shows a different example of the doubling from a different coin. The 4th pic definitely shows a small D and S.

A smaller D and S is evident here:

Pic 5 shows notches from where a smaller letter should appear, but the letters are ghosts and don't appear. Just what I believe are the tops of the letters:

Pic 6 shows what I believe are the top notches of the smaller letters that are underneath the large letters

Incused lettering has some weird effects. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a doubled die or die wear.

Am I a jerk if I'm saying this reminds me a lot of the '84 olympics $1 "ddo", where the incuse lettering had doubled with split serifs .....but it was determined to be a result of die bounce on incuse lettering.

    Cool find...

At the last Long Beach show the Mint was there and they had a change machine that was giving out the new 2017-P Effigy Mounds quarters. I got a bunch of them just for fun to give out to folks at the coin club and to use in change... I took a quick look at a few of them before spending them all and didn't notice anything special... maybe I need to start looking closer at the new stuff

    :+1:

They seem to be two different things. The olympic coin doubling is the same size. The ones OP posted look to be large over small.

I'll say this last thing then let the actual experts weight in(because this would be an AWESOME DDR discovery)
I think this appears to be large over small because when the loose hub bounced on the incuse strike, the bounce would only barely strike leaving a smaller impression since the "full" lettering wasn't struck.

Bodin, thanks for those pics. Looks to me like there might be something similar going on. Those pics also show examples of a 'large over small' type of doubling.

Something that puts some questions in my mind Manorcourtman is the statement 'I discovered multiple examples that are not quite the same. " That makes me think there is some other mechanism that may be occurring than a doubled die. Finding multiple examples with differences would not seem appropriate for a double die... unless of course there are multiple doubled dies that were in use. Like the Minnesota doubled dies?

These definitely require more study... if a for sure doubled die, then awesome!

Remember a couple years ago the idea of the US Mint seeding errors to increase sales / interest? Sure seems strange to see an error of this magnitude on a common coin, when it hasn't happen for a good long time.
