Purchased raw in Europe. This is what original gold should look like.

Did you get it graded in Europe or in the USA?
I wonder if it would make a difference.

Wonder what stories it could tell

US but I have had coins graded in both places. Paris submissions are sent to Newport Beach for grading at all times other than special grading weeks where the graders come to Paris so really the same eyes would be seeing the coins in either location. I do have good luck with premium crossovers being sent to Paris vs. NB and the fee structure incentives high value crossovers in Paris due to the lack of guarantee premium in the Europe pricing structure.

Very nice old gold...One wonders if it went to Europe with a politician, tourist or as a government transaction.... Cheers, RickO

Do you suppose it ended up in Europe because of the gold grab by the gov't. in 1933?

I have found southern gold at times across Europe; Italy, Germany, Luxembourg. I have bought several New Orleans gold coins, Carson City, less Charlotte but still several. Seems to indicate that southern gold was at one time included with larger denominations in paying US debt in the mid to late 1800's. Just a hypothesis as the frequency seems too great to me to suggest that these are routinely sourced from casual collectors of the period brining coins back to Europe.

    Interesting about the international grading.
Seems fitting for a coin of that significance.

Hunting for Dahlonega gold in Europe sounds fun - and what a great find.

There is a very good chance that QE has been in Europe since the civil war. A good amount of arms was purchased in Europe by the CSA. And it should be no surprise that payment was required in gold.
