1848-D/D Half Eagle - Orlando ANA Newp

Went to Orlando with the intent of only selling and getting Todd at Bluecc to photo a few coins. Although those tasked were completed successfully I found myself confronted with an opportunity to add a neat Dahlonega rarity to my collection. After telling myself over and over that was I here to sell, and not buy, I just couldn't resist and pulled the trigger.

Doug Winter writes: "The 1848-D/D is the rarest collectible Dahlonega gold coin, rarer even than the popular 1861-D gold dollar and half eagle. There are likely not more than 12-15 known and this variety has been included in advanced sets of Dahlonega half eagles for many years."

As you can see in the image, the original mint mark was punched too low so it was crudely effaced and a new mint mark punched higher.

Although quite rare, it remains much more affordable than both the 1861-D's mentioned above. This due to the fact that a limited amount of serious Dahlonega collectors do varieties and that, even though PCGS recognizes the variety, it currently is not listed in the Red Book. I suspect that if/when this variety gets listed in the Red Book its popularity will increase.

It is the same one. Al Adams jumped on it from Doug's email. He knew he had several clients that would be interested, me included. He knew it was fully priced so he let it go for for a very tiny bump of what he paid.

That's great spread on the mintmark and it looks like a nice, choice coin, as well.

Just noticed on Coin Facts PCGS chose to image when it was graded. My only beef with coin is that the dang holder doesn't fit in an NGC box. Geez, with this change I will need to carry two boxes with me. :#

Cool coin, I'm no expert on better gold but rare is rare anyway you slice it.

yup, i have the same problem i had everything in an NGC box, because of a couple NGC coins i don't want to change holders on...

also, these "newer" pcgs holders don't fit in the first and last slots of the older blue boxes.

you should post some of the other coins that todd imaged for you!

Congrats on the pickup! Always nice to see a '48 D/D. The coin means a lot to me, as it was my first foray into Southern Gold several years ago. I posted about my example here.

I agree with your comment that if the '48 D/D is listed in the Redbook these will jump. The problem then will be finding them, as they are so darn rare.

Not mine any more unfortunately. (Can you say seller's remorse?). Have tried to track it down since selling it a few years ago but no luck.

But yes it is a stunner.

Anyone who goes to a show with such a steadfast intent ("To Sell Only") and expect to carry it off, cannot possibly be a collector. So you are all good. ;)
