Not a clue how that happened.
Wild! I kinda like it. Very nice colors, but it does not look "market acceptable". I would have picked it up though if I came across it. It's different. I'd like to know the story behind it.

Didn't those come in cello with an Ike and a Quarter? My guess is the cello was torn and a piece was missing.
Looks like it was in a safe during a fire and part of the cello melted.
It looks like what happens to plastic when in contact with caustic compounds.
Coin doctor experimental piece?
Idk what caused it either, but I don't think it was intentionally messed with. I like it.

Soak it in acetone for a while and see what happens.
Nasty looking... seems the protective covering split and it was in an inhospitable atmosphere... Cheers, RickO
Electrical mishap.....wild.
Thats what I first thought. Then I looked at the Ebay sellers other coins... mostly world coins and no others were toned. So I doubt this seller is was experimenting with doctoring... He could have picked it up from someone else though.
No those were the UNC versions. This is a proof. They were in sealed plastic capsules. But I think your right, except the coin was kept in a 2x2 cardboard flip. And the plastic on the cardboard flip tore and there was a piece missing where the toning occurred.
Ive seen that happen on other coins, just not to this level of color.
I'll soak in acetone to see if it effects the color and using a q-tip and some dip I will see if I can remove/lighten some of the black lines.
For $9.99 cant really lose on the coin.
Definitely not natural and not pretty at all....to me at least.
I dont necessarily think its pretty, just unusual. So if you know its definitely NOT natural - explain. And how do you think it occurred ?
Give it a guess.
I have no idea how it was "created" and don't really care.
The coin was stored in an isolated atmosphere where there was a high concentration of a sulfur based compound (think open jar of silver dip) and the exposed surface of the coin in the damaged 2X2 reacted with the air transfer of the compound.

1K coin in the 'right' holder.
From your lips to God's ears...
So then you're just guessing that its not NT and have no way to make a definitive statement... okay.
Hideous-looking, IMO.
Thats an interesting theory. It would have had to have a high sulfur concentration to produce those types of colors.
Or it was purposefully gassed.
Nothing in this Ebay sellers current or past inventory seems to indicate they are a coin dipper though.
Interesting. Kind of like a layer of film formed and then broke off. Strange
Wow! I don't know neither what and how that happened but it certainly looks cool. It almost looks like the mask of "The Phantom of The opera"?

A good buy for $13 - the seller said the black is reflection from camera and another proof has some background reflection. If you are the purchaser, could you post pics when it arrives? I suspect It is very light toning and the dark lines look like it was liquid assisted.

Absolutely. I will submit it as well and see what happens. Maybe not on the next submission since I have 5 wildly NT JFKs that are $1k coins and I dont want to poison the submission with a coin that is suspect.
It 'could' have been toned with lye and an electrical current applied via a small diameter wire.
Hmmm interesting... from a battery or a stronger electric current ?
What does a $1k Kennedy look like?
On the topic at hand: I think it looks like the 'toning' is flaking at the edges so I'm going to go with some thick residue actually stuck onto the coin.

So it showed up in the mail today...
And now its soaking in acetone... for the past 20 minutes... no change.
How long should it soak for IF there was going to be a change ? Ive never tried to remove toning off a coin using acetone...
I even rubbed the toned area with a Q-tip... nothing.
And its very strange, ChrisH is correct in a way, there's a slight lip on the toning between L and I in Liberty.... its not flaking off though...
Acetone won't remove toning but it does remove a lot of surface contaminates.. 20 minutes is probably enough to conclude it isn't soluble. This is very strange.

A 9 Volt battery would work.
The reason I suspected that method is the 'dots' along the dark line.
The wire leaving the coins surface would create a small 'arc' or spark, especially on the reverse.
Just a guess.
I think it may be an accurate guess. Something has definitely been applied to the coin's surface. There is a slightly raised area that could only come from an application of some type of solution. But whatever was applied is very well bonded now though.
Would lye come off with acetone though ?
You could try ms70 on it(does this contain lye? I think it does), rinse it with water. If that does't take it off I am out of ideas... gasoline?

I don't know if acetone would remove it.
*******It is Lye AND Sulfur that is used**, Sorry, omitted the sulfur in my first post*****
