Always this much hand-wringing?
All,
I'm new to the board, but not to numismatics.
Are there typically this many negative threads? It seems like a lot of threads, from overgrading, counterfeit slabs, poor market, AT, gripes about what prices certain types are bringing now vs last year/2013/2011/a decade ago, and so on. It's the same on the PM board.
Is it always this negative here? Cause, you're all freaking out the new guy.

Yes Sango.......it is quite negative here.
Keep in mind that most of us are deep into middle age. Our backs hurt, our kids hate us and our wives are out shopping for a fur to compensate for the toned half dime that we picked up at Heritage.
Our favorite sports team has more losses than wins. The master cylinder on the Lexus is shot and a dental crown is now $1400.
This could be a vintage Pez forum, a Mensa for dummies forum or even a wide open forum (hint) and the tone would be skeptical, truculent and divisive.
Welcome to the board!!
This is a playground for giants and dwarfs. We come together to sing Kumbaya early in the morning.

Maybe not entirely....but I think much of the negativity comes from the BUSINESS side of the hobby. And to be fair, even for a pure collector (whatever that is), the business of buying and selling coins is unavoidable.
But you'll still see even the most jaded grading/sticker/market/price troll find joy in seeing a nice looking coin, or hearing about a new discovery, or a recently completed objective.
Numismatics still pokes through.
Always negative?...No.
Currently negative?...many themes are running that way.
Post some cheerful stuff and change it.
Sift through all the opinions, facts, and figures. Then make your own assessment.
Gad @roadrunner , that's a pretty negative comment.
PS:
Hi Sango,
Welcome and enjoy the show. The Ringling Brothers Circus is not really over and Barnum & Baily would be proud !
For those of you who have been here long enough to remember the Open Forum ... can you imagine what that forum would be like today? Wow!!!!
funny stuff
We're all nattering nabobs of negativity. We like taking turns in the lead. Are you ready ?

Yes, the BUSINESS side of the hobby is not fun these days. If that's all the hobby was about there would be no fun, I'd be selling my collection. If you get specific it's the GRADING side of the hobby that's no fun and the people who worship icons.
Thanks for starting such a positive thread - welcome to the boards
No, dammit. Who the he## says we're being negative! This is our happy face,
Now get off my lawn!
A lot of the negativity seems to revolve around a person's perception (or individual situation/circumstances) that spooks them to the point of posting on the boards. You will find that most of those posts are 100% speculative and there is often an equal or greater number of people who feel the exact opposite of the OP.
Opinions/speculation/curiosity are great and interesting and bring about thoughtful discussions but posing opinions/speculation/curiosity as fact and dismissing anyone who sees things differently is where a lot of the negativity comes up. When I see so many opposite opinions, I take comfort knowing that things are not actually as dire as some make them out to be.
I have to say though, when it comes to historical and specific numismatic threads you can learn quite a lot from the folks here. There are many interesting and education threads/posts about so many cool things.
Welcome @Sango , don't be scared.
Been a little weird here lately. Lots of new posters who'd rather instigate than contribute.
Nothing wrong with strong disagreements but no room for direct personal attacks.
Poor social skills.
It's like any large group. Optimists, pessimists, happy-go-lucky, grumps, humble, arrogant, rich, poor, educated, ignorant........
So, in conclusion........What kinda coins you like?!!

I prefer negativity. It's a sign that things can get better.

Welcome to the madness.
The sky has been falling for many years now. Sometimes it's falling rather quickly. Sometimes it's only falling at an average rate. To the best of my knowledge, it hasn't actually hit anyone yet.
Collectors are fine. Collectors who leveraged the kids college fund to overspend on coins are a bit nervous right now. Dealers are a mix of perfectly fine and perfectly terrified. Whenever I start to worry about such things I just remember that normal people don't collect coins and everything here suddenly makes sense again.
I find that reading the Forum posts is easier if one pairs the whine with a good cheese.
Time is fleeting. Madness takes its toll.....
Enjoy the hobby. While you can....

perhaps I'll re-start whining wednesday
I've got a list ready.
Welcome Sango. Stick around and remember you don't have to read every thread. Skip the negative threads if they freak you out and read the ones that you think are interesting. You'll come to enjoy this place.
Welcome! You can learn much here. Sometimes the negativity gets me down but the benefits make it all worthwhile.
Oh come on, we are a fun group. Every now and then you need a little negativity to balance out of things.
I think a lot of people here are frustrated because after the financial collapse in 2008, paper assets and real estate have come back, but coins are now just recovering, and that's after a false start in early 2014. Let's face it, after you've sunk thousands into coins, they become an investment, whether you choose to think about them that way or not.
Or a glass of wine... Tyramine (also in aged cheeses) causes the release of catecholamines including dopamine. In short, it makes you happy.
It's nice to see everyone stopping in to welcome new posters. These posters positively made me laugh.

Do you want to compare notes?
I love this place! You all are quite interesting characters

And I love you all's knowledge, info, and perspectives as well. I'm soaking it up in several new areas (to me)
We're all well ahead of the curve just being here and now. Let's keep finding the good stuff.
Cheers, fellas
Had to go back and re-read it again, I laughed so much, and appreciate the welcomes, guys! I like them all, I'm more of a cherry picker than a type set guy, but give it time
I'm interested in ALL of them with the right strike, eye appeal, luster, and of course, price.
The only negative thread on the front page is this one!
Or Happy Place.
@Sango ..... Welcome aboard.... Yep.. there are some negatives...but also a lot of happy posts/threads... really great ones when someone finds 'that' coin they have been searching for.... or they complete a series...
The occasional 'negative Nelly' will creep in here and there... mostly I ignore them... Have fun... Cheers, RickO
Welcome to the group! Great topic for a thread. The fantastic sense of humor here is a perfect counterbalance to the occasional Debbie downer posting.
Welcome...
Please do not take the running commentary that seems to create controvery as to the state of the coin market too serious. This is a great hobby and you can make it what you what it to be... Within various limitations
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
How would you define "negative"? Just because people here are probably a lot smarter than the general population doesn't mean we should be smiling from ear to ear like some of the people I know who are on "happiness" meds.. Compulsory positive sales mentality was one of the reasons for the market bubbles bursting in the 2008 era. Honesty requires seeing both sides of any issue or topic. Or maybe we should all be content like in this ST episode. http://www.homevideos.com/startreks/photos-star-trek/william-shatner-returnofarchons-2.jpg
Welcome, Sango. Hope you have a good time and stick around for a long while.
Welcome aboard Sango!
As for the "hand-wringing", it may seem more prevalent due to the "Yelp" syndrome: Folks tend to leave restaurant reviews when they love it or hate it, but not when it's just okay. Same on the forum opinion of "the Coin Market", as many have said, the collectors tend to just quietly go about their business and may actually welcome lower prices for the coins they want to add.

Carry on gents, you're all a hoot! I will get some better photos of him when he arrives
And thanks again for the welcome and the sense of humor(s)!
Good one! I love it
It's hard to explain.
Sometimes the forum stays true to its purpose.
But remember these are coin collectors and dealers posting here, so that can explain what appears.
And the villagers can get easily confused at times.
Welcome.
I like it. High end dealers to low end to ebay and all collectors alike and inbetween. I've been here a couple weeks now and seem to really enjoy the vibe. It's nice to be able to talk coins. Great place to be and I'm thankful PCGS hosts us.
I would not like to think of a "wide open" forum.
People could get hurt and seek refuge.
The forum is not overly or even somewhat negative. Members are just expressing their opinions. Everything is just right. Have fun. It's not personal.
