ASE's

ccmorganccmorgan Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭

Thinking about buying some more ASE's 1 roll or so at a time. I buy some every now and then especially if silver drops.
Anyway I was wondering who is the least expensive with shipping. My local coin shop charges $3.50 over spot and a bit less if you buy 100s.
I see the US mint is the last place one should buy from @ $44.95 each.

Thanks guys.

Check this site. It compares real time prices from multiple big bullion companies so you know who's the cheapest at any given moment...

PS, the US Mint only sells proof & burnished collectors versions, hence the higher price. They sell their bullion versions to authorized dealers to be distributed to the public. You cannot buy regular eagles directly from them.

Looking on eBay, and searching the lowest buy it now, you can generally find ASE rolls for $2-2.50 over spot each, with free shipping. $2.50 is my premium limit, I won't pay more unless it's in a pcgs holder.

If you are patient, there are some deals on the BST here.

Show me a link where you can buy ASE rolls for $2 - $2.50 above spot on eBay. $3 above spot with free s&h is about as low as you can go, unless your liquidating you business & need fast cash. The Mint sells them to the Authorized Buyers at $2 above spot and they in turn ain't gonna sell them to their list of dealers or clients for less than that.

Liberty coins sold about 50 2017 PCGS MS70 for $28.00 with free shipping the other day on ebay before they caught onto their mistake and raised the price to $38.25.... I wasn't greedy and only got one ... Which arrived today and is beautiful.

I bought more than 10 rolls off eBay last year 1.99-2.45 over spot and never a bit more. JM bullion and apmex often have specials and MANY others.
Especially on the weekend. Friday to Sunday you see amazing specials. I usually pay no more than .89 per oz over spot on non-ase bullion.

Thanks for the "disagree" though. Yin and yang and all that. Do more research before you call me wrong.

At this minute I can't find one, but I'll bet you 1 silver eagle that within 7 days i can find less than $2.51 over spot per eagle in a roll of 20.

I'll man up and send an as eagle to you if I am wrong, of you will commit to the same agreement.
Send me one when i post the link.

That was from an APMEX email and on their website. Don't know if it was on eBay or not. i don't mess with enough bullion to waste time poring thru 1000's of eBay listings looking for $2.50 over.

You can get them for $2.12 over if you want to buy 500 or more. Or you can just post a WTB ASEs at $1.00 over or $1.50 over or $1.60 over and see if anyone bites. You never know, you may find someone hard up enough to sell to you at $1 over.

If you scroll down a bit the price increases the older the ASE?
Also the '96 and '86 ASE's carry a hefty premium, why?

Regardless of all the advice here, just keep in mind if you lose a deal to a shady seller, you've probably lost all the savings you realized by buying cheap vs. a reputable dealer.

I generally buy a roll every year to cherry pick a couple of bullion ASE's for my collection. For the past few years, that's been from Apmex, only because they've highly reliable, and do a high enough volume where I'm generally assured they haven't searched though the roll I'm buying. I have to assume every roll on ebay's been cherry picked (or worse, from alibaba), though I have bought from ebay before when I just wanted cheap ASE's. If your patient, even the major dealers have sales, but generally not for the current year.

Yeah, the ASE's in the mint store are collector versions, but if you want shiny, you just can't beat a proof ASE... :)

1986 was the first year of issue, otherwise unremarkable at about 9th or 10th in sales.
In 1996 they only sold 3.6M oz, lowest mintage for the coin by about 600K. Second lowest mintage was 1994 at 4.2M oz.

anything over a 2.50 premium is too much. The way you find them for close to spot is to find a seller who bought them for less than current spot. I find such sellers on ebay and this does not normally include bullion dealers.

Lowest mintage is not the same as low mintage. Hefty premiums for any ungraded ASE's are a waste of money. Buy the weight, not the year.

There are deals to be found, but one must be diligent in research... I have found Apmex to offer good deals, get on their email list...there are others and I am not an authority on this..I just stack when I see a really good deal - and probably miss just as many or more... :D Cheers, RickO

They SD are not an AP so they and whomever they buy from must both be working on razor thin margins. Also, shipping is about $8 for any order which adds almost 40 cents per coin to your cost for 1 roll of 20.

I don't go looking for good deals on ASE's but in the past there were several sellers on the BST Forum that were selling them for $1.00 to $1.50 over spot delivered and I took advantage of these good deals. They were apparently raising money to buy expensive coins that they had been looking for their collections.

They're not really giving it away. They want a quick sale for quick cash to roll it over into something they want for their collection or something they know they can flip quick for good money and are willing to take a slight loss on ASE's to make sure they get it to gain more on the flip or add a coin they've been looking for. It's a win win situation.

I see silver went up .54 yesterday after the fed rate increase. WOW, I guess I'll hold off on buying some ASE's for now. Should have pulled the trigger when it was $16.90ish but hindsight is always 20/20.

I noticed a few dealers listed ASE outside of bullion category. With a 10% ebuck that shows up once a while, it is possible to get closer to spot price.

ASE's (and other similar gov't issues) have a bit of magic to them, so be careful. I was called a idiot for selling 1000 of them about 50 cents BELOW spot. It was an all cash deal, at a coin show. I wanted to sell all of them, and that was the best I could do.

    Why?

I was in them less than $25 each, some less than $10 each, and sold them for $46 each, shortly before the bottom dropped out of the silver market. I was not panicking, but I thought the train was about to run off the tracks, and that was the best I could do.

I bought some back at $25, and others back at $21, and so forth down to about $18, and stopped. I am still upside down on the current batch, but made over $24K net after taxes on the ones I sold.

I could have ridden them up, ridden them down, ridden them sideways. I learned my lesson during the dot com watching the stock in the company I worked for, a huge company go from about $8 to $100 back down to $10.

Even if I don't get THE ABSOLUTE BEST PRICE I am fine with getting a decent price, and having cash in hand.

So when you see people selling $1 over spot or other low prices, they may be FINE with the profit they are making.

Can't answer your original question but suggesting that the best deal on these might just be at your local Shows. or even some Bigtime Shows may give you the deal of a lifetime?
I once visited a Coin shop near my home and were looking for Silver Rounds. Then I came across a few of Silver Eagles he thrown in the mix of the Silver rounds. He was selling the Eagles at the same price the rounds were going for. $2.75 over spot. A pretty good deal in my book. I purchased 6 Eagles (two were 1986's) along with some Silver Rounds. Two of the Eagles I later placed on two of my Giveaways! One was a 1986 ;) Those people know who they are if they post here. :D
