Boy's Town Centennial Commemorative Coins - Thursday 3/9 **Gold Prices Posted**

These go on sale tomorrow, Thursday 3/9 @ noon ET.
Details for the 6 coins:
Clad ½; PF $21.95, Unc $20.95. 300,000 between the two, no house hold limit
Silver $1; PF $47.95, Unc $46.95. 350,000 between the two, no house hold limit
Gold $5; PF $400.45, Unc $395.45. 50,000 between the two, no house hold limit
PF 3 Coin set, $461.45 ($8.90 savings over individual purchase). 15,000 Product Limit, house hold limit of 2
At least they are offering a 3 coin set. Why only the PF version and not the Unc is not explained.
Are you in for any? Will these be a repeat of the Lion's Club anemic sales? Will the 3 Coin set sell out one day one?
I'm torn on these. My budget has been taxed by other accusations of late so I may not participate this time. Getting all six may not be an option. A 3 Coin set? Maybe.

The topic really does not interest me, but it would be the first $5 gold I don't have among the modern pieces.
The Lions Club piece did interest me because it was active in the town where I grew up.
All multi-coin sets are proof issues. Did they ever do a multi-coin uncirc?
3-coin day one? How 'bout month one. Took US Marshals something like 6 weeks to sell out the three coin set. (US Marshal owners need to chime in here. HAhahahaha...) And I might be wrong, but I don't see the attraction of this coin on any level.
Not in. Bought my annual roll of Silver Eagles and a 5oz Animal Cracker puck (p-mint version) instead. I think both 2017 commens will be racing to the bottom of the sales charts. I'll be waiting for the threads of "New Keys!" at the end of the year...
As mentioned before, I might have bought in if they put Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy on the coins. That, at least, speaks to my childhood.
Accusations? I Do Not Think It Means What You Think It Means.
So far this year, the mint has done an exceptional job of preventing me from spending money with them. Problem is, that money is being absorbed by increases in real estate taxes and health care costs.
The $5 gold is 0.016" smaller than the ¼ oz. GAE and 0.124 g lighter in overall weight. Thus the lower price compared to the ¼ oz. of $9.55.
Total cost to get all 6 would be $924.80
Edited to add total cost for 6
I may jump on it as these look nice in USM case and may slab them at some future date.
I just don't have the interest in this one....
Public Law 114-30 directs the Mint to strike and issue up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 350,000 silver dollar coins and 300,000 half dollar clad coins to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Boys Town, which is Dec. 12, 2017.
This image depicts the Boys Town gold reverse.
The obverse or heads side of the $5 gold coin features a thoughtful portrait of Father Flanagan designed by Artistic Infusion program designer Donna Weaver and sculpted by U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver Don Everhart.
The gold reverse was also designed by Donna Weaver, sculpted by U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver Jim Licaretz, and features an outstretched hand holding a young oak tree growing from an acorn. As stated in the idiom “Mighty oaks from little acorns grow,” this design represents the potential of each child helped by Boys Town to grow into a productive, complete adult.
Both the obverse and reverse of the silver dollar coin were designed by Mint Artistic Infusion program designer Emily Damstra and sculpted by U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver Joseph Menna. The front of the coin shows a young girl sitting alone and gazing upward into the branches of an oak tree looking for help. The empty space around the girl is deliberate and meant to illustrate the child’s sense of loneliness, isolation, and helplessness. The back of the coin features an oak tree offering shelter and a sense of belonging to the family holding hands below it, which includes the girl from the front.
@BackroadJunkie Back in day (=10 to 15 or so years ago) the mint used to issue sets of commemoratives that included all the PR and all the MS coins. Typically the set would include 6 coins: The gold, silver, and clad coins in both proof and mint state. Indeed, some of those sets were issued in nice wooden boxes. Of course, the ultimate was the 32 coin set of 1996 Olympic that was issued over the years 1995 to 1996 and came with a beautiful large, sort of lockable, wooden box. Not too many of those were sold, though I did acquire one at that time.
Couldn't help myself. Got the 3 coin PF set....but that's all.

No hang or freezes. In and out in just under a minute. I am an addict.
Addiction taking over logic.

Huh. I've been buying from the mint since 1999 (18 years? 18 YEARS?) and I don't recall a MS/PF Commem set...
You and Younique are the only ones I've seen that have actually admitted to buying...
I own several sets of commems that have both PROOF and Unc in the wooden box.
They were very nice looking.
Yes, I'm just a Mint junky. Got a Silver monkey on my back. Jonesing for a proof set fix.
Those multi sets in wooden boxes were before 1999.

What, no instant sell-out on Boys Town??? None for me, I'm done for a while with the USM guys. Maybe some more flipper keys will be created, because I'm not playing. lol
Received promotion for Boys Town release today in US Mail. In todays day and age, I'm surprised to receive this. I wonder how much this cost.
Three folds, double sided.
Addiction is such a powerful force.
I have collected all of the modern commems, and it is SO hard to break off, even though I can't argue with any of the admonishments from more rational members here, and consider the Mint now an abusive pusher!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
I've collected the commems, but I think this is where I get off the buying train.
1) Other than the movie, I never personally came across the organization
2) I'm not interested in the subject (compared with other patriotic or cultural figures).
3 ) It would sit in its box unloved.
It likely will become a new key, but I know that I wouldn't be excited receiving it, and wouldn't get much fulfillment looking at it.

Hummm I thought this was a winner. Time will tell.
Ah, all the olympic sets. I'm having a hard time finding a place to store all my (empty) 5oz puck packaging. Those would be... space consuming.
When I got into it, I did pursue all the mint and proof sets back into the 50's, but never went after the commems...
Little Rock did it for me. It was such an uninspiring design that I just didn't care and passed. After that it was easy. I was just able to redirect my OCD elsewhere. Like those damn 5oz pucks.
I still buy those I like, like the Twain last year, but don't even hesitate to pass on the designs I don't.
This is not for me... very uninspiring design....not even close to artistic... Cheers, RickO
Catch a falling knife and think:
" he's too heavy , ain't he, brother ? "

Wow. They actually did sell some of these. (Some is the key word here.)
(Coinworld reporting first day sales.)
Weak sales. Less than The Lions Club first day. Should have know from the really poor reception here.
Hi, I'm here to humiliate myself on this thread too
Is the $5 gold a coin or $5 of gold flake found on Bots Town property?
I'm surprised at the nationwide lack of interest as the charity is as good as other recent ones. Can we conclude it is the designs to blame?
Yes
It's a horse designed by committee......ie a camel
I placed an order on the first day for one $5 uncirculated gold
These ugly coins are a clever plot to make flippers hang themselves in frustration. Seems to be working
The four and six piece sets in the wooden boxes were attractive and fun, but they were bad buys directly from the mint. I put together a set of all of them, except for the 32 piece set from the Atlanta Olympics. I have the eight piece Proof set from that. I bought all but a couple of them for less than the issue price.
I hate to admit this, but I have a complete set of both the proof and uncirculated silver dollars.
It does sound dumb now but a few years ago it was kind of fun.
I guess I am stuck and will buy one of each to keep the sets up.
It does seem kind of odd to pay $100 for the two coins with shipping knowing that next year you will be able to buy them on ebay for $30 to $35 each with free shipping.
Yes, I'm also going to hop off the Mint wagon on both commems this year. I actually really liked both of last year's issues, but these are just about as boring as one can get--even with lions on the back! Also expect both of them to be new keys!
Just got my order delivered by a uniformed representative of a semi-governmental agency. The 3 coin proof set is flawless.
Anybody want to sell the gold at 5% back of melt?

I'm with "Coinhack" on this; I also have a complete set of Modern Commems - and I keep saying
that I'm ditching buying anymore - but - with my luck, the ones I do not buy are certain to be the
ones that will quadruple in price. So, I doggedly continue to buy them from the Mint - and not
from outside sources with the hope of getting them at half price. The Dollar and Half Dollar
from the 2017 Boys Town set are a disgrace - although the $5 Fr. Flannagan is pretty decent.
I also agree with another poster, the Little Rock Commem left a lot to be desired as well.
Still, I bought it, plugged it in the album and never looked at it again ( for all intents and
purposes ).
There is a slim chance that I will ever get my costs back, but, I really don't care - it's been fun
collecting these Commems since their initial order date of 1982. I can no longer pick up the
set in one oversize binder, it's broken up into three Eagle Raw Albums..... The 2x2 openings
on their pages fit the Commem Dollars perfectly. Although, I do need to use flips to secure
the Commem Halves.

New Barber Purchases
The plows could not keep up yesterday and neighborhood roads were not plowed.
The road into and out of the PO was impassable except for high snow clearance vehicles.
no deliveries for me. Even FedEx shutdown.
Wait a few years.
Besides the Boys Town $5 could be like the Jackie Robinson and Smithsonian coins. Few people want them so the number issued ends up on the low side.
I bought the three piece set. I'm sucker for the mint issued multi coin sets with the box and papers. It probably dates to my latent desire to find a box and papers that go with the Pan Pac set. Finding one of those is FAR harder than finding any of the coins, including the $50 round. All you need is money for one of those. I have not figured out what takes to buy the Pan-Pac box or even the copper frame. I always run into dealers who tell me, "I just sold one."
