As for myself ... I'm a hands down good old burlap bag toned Morgan dollar collector.
Although there are many different type of toners. IMO - There's nothing like a pretty toned bag toner with some textiles on the coin...

Good old Bag toned says @TONEDDOLLARS
    I couldn't agree more :)

I like all sorts of nice toners, but I prefer crescent toned coins to textile toned coins without color. But if we're talking like the one posted by TONEDDOLLARS, I'd go with it everyday!

Yeap ... There's seems to be a lot of doctored stuff out there unfortunally! Education on the buyer should solve the trick.

I wonder how many TPG graders are less educated on bag toning than a typical Morgan dollar buyer? They might see thousands of silver dollars per week, many having come right out of bags....while Joe Collector may only see a few dozen or hundred or even none, very few with "A-" or better toning.

Give me deep dark toning or give me death!

My favorite color toning is lilac. I almost never see it, but when I do, my wallet opens quicker than a skirt on prom night.

Love the Sirna Moose @AuroraBorealis !

Out of the 2 TrueViews (06666325 and 13695320) and Brandon's photo's, I like Brandon's the best because the colors and luster seem to pop the most. Here's Brandon's page and my matting of his photos:

    My favorite Textile

If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.

My favorite type?? NONE!! But everyone already knew that... :D:D ....
@AuroraBorealis... Wayne that is an amazing layout of your collection... you have tremendous consistency in your collection. Even though it is not my preference, I must admire the collection you have assembled.

    End roll toner.

I wish I had a Morgan set toned like this. I'd be pretty happy.

Port view of the Santa María above two hemispheres flanked by the date 1492. "World's Columbian Exposition Chicago" encircles the rim with the date of striking at bottom.

Charles T Morgan's art on the back of an 1893 Commemorative 50c US Half Dollar. It'll have to do.

AuroraBorealis has the second nicest group of toned Morgans I have ever seen.

I love the lavender on this 1975 commemorative art bar. The closest photo color I've gotten so far is this, and I even changed my light. It truly does no justice even with different shades of silver around it either white or black.

I've never seen anything else like it. I'm pretty sure it's the plastic sheath. It's one of six on a 1974 or 1975 US commemorative art bar. They have an original case and certificate when all are put together.

This thread reminds me of Anaconda RC, Adrian and Brendon. They were heavily into toners .. the predecessors to Legend?

Never cared for 'em myself because I believe many of them are artificial.

    • I think it's always good to do as much learning on toned coins before purchasing them (for the newer collecter).
    • There are many different types of toning. Tissue, Envelope, burlap bag, Album toned and so on.
    • Understanding the progressions, luster, pop and vibrance of toned coins maybe he first step. Then looking at as many of them to understand what's the difference between a $200 toner compared to a $3,000 for instance.
    • If that does not intrigue you (which of course is more then fine :)
    • Maybe toned coins are not your thing...
and that fine of course :)
What ever you may collect! I hope and am sure you enjoy it. "More Power to ya" in that regards.

Many of the toners were created by man, not nature.

I once heard a dealer brag how he set-up a toning factory with an oven and sulfur in a steamer.

I wouldn't pay a big premium for a toner because I believe many are manufactured by coin doctors.

Look at the coins that AuroraBorealis has put up on this page and let me know which ones were created by man I would never want to make the mistake of buying one if they came up for sale. :o

Over the years I have had three or four people tell me they could reproduce the toning on some of my Morgans. I stated that I would buy all they could make. Never saw any of them again.

It all boils down to one thing buy what you like, but don't criticize what others buy.

If It doesn't have great eye appeal, I don't want it.

I personally like the target toning type. While i like the appearance of those that are fully toned and can appreciate some vivid colors, something to my eyes is really cool about seeing colors around the edges and workings its way into a whiter field in the middle.

Sorry I didn't word that right. and it was not directly aimed at you.
