Sorry to say but I don't think it's genuine. Compare the lettering to pictures on CoinFacts.

Yep, I haven't done any comparing but I think it is counterfeit.

Rims don't look like a typical cent from the 50's. Fake.

It won't grade--as others have said, it's counterfeit.
    I am 100% sure.

LIBERTY has the doubling in the wrong direction.
Can't have rotation counterclockwise on the date and clockwise on the other side of the coin .

LOL gotta love the bow tie in the OP. :D

Edited to add Abe looks kinda high too - droopy eyes and a weird grin.

Thanks for all the feed back and I'm glad I joined the forum. My father bought this earlier this year, looks like it's time to go visit the coin shop...

  • lkeigwinlkeigwin Posts: 16,893 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don't see why a reputable shop would not make a full refund for a counterfeit coin.

A reputable coin shop should have known that coin was counterfeit IMHO.

If you can't spot the "grinning Lincoln" as a problem, you don't have the expertise to be a coin dealer, at least not for 1955 Doubled Die Cents.

Thank you for all of your comments and help. Received a full refund with no questions asked. They were very apologetic. It will probably be a while before we even think about purchasing another 55 DD.

Maybe avoid that coin shop, but there may be other reputable dealers in your area. There are also many, many great dealers on these forums, eBay, and others that have their own websites.

It is also wise to buy in a PCGS, NGC, or ANACS slab.

I wonder what the coin shop will do with the returned 55 DD.
