Fascinating Strike Thru Lincoln Cent on Both Sides

ThePennyLadyThePennyLady Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭✭✭

Found this really interesting Lincoln cent in Long Beach that looks like it was struck through a thread on both sides. What do you think?

Is there any evidence of the strike-through on the edge?

  • ThePennyLadyThePennyLady Posts: 4,499 ✭✭✭✭✭

There's no strike thru directly on the edge of the coin, but it does go all the way over the rim on the reverse at 12:00.

I will bet it was being minted on a very hot day and a fan blew the floating thread into the die press. Note, in this photo that I took, the individual operating the vintage die press has a can of compressed air at his side to keep out debris. That would not have been available in 1913.
