did you know that 1854 $5 gold coins have two varieties?
normal (~325 known)

"earring" (ddo, fs-101)

do you see the "earring?" it's actually the bottom of the earlobe, repeated in the die.
there is another curl, as well, which is just the same bottom curl, also repeated in the die.
anyway, it looks like an earring, which makes it an interesting variety, i think! furthermore, pcgs has only identified 12 of these coins (not including this one)!
do you have a coin with an earring (or so called earring)? post it to this thread!
next, check out the slabs:
these are perfect companion pieces! same look, grade, etc...but each a different variety. thanks to cro for finding these, and for the great customer service!
finally...vote in the poll and/or let me know what you think.
poll question:
which do you like best????
Comments
Note that the second coin is actually pictured first in the slab pics
thanks. that is a bit confusing.
Ok, that makes more sense. Was about to say I liked the first one just a bit better in the close up pics because of the color, but it looked like the color in the 2nd one in the slab pic was a little better...guess it's the same coin. Which means, I guess I like the first 'normal' one just a bit better, but they're both very nice coins and they do make a really cool matched pair. Congrats on the twins!
The date position is also different in these 2 die varieties.
1. High - 1 touches bust
2. Middle - 1 does not touch bust, date slightly uphill in this photo.
I like them both. Great-looking coins!

Very cool! Nice pair! Reminds me of an old thread I did on "Coin Pairs"
Latin American Collection
I like the first coin...seems a brighter gold.... I also noted the different date positions as mentioned by yosclimber.... Cheers, RickO
yes, the date is significantly different. in fact, it's almost as if one could be called "small date" because the 8 and 5 are smaller on the DDO example.
thanks everyone for your comments and votes.
