I have the book below and it's a series of articles written by various numismatists focusing on the development of money in the Americas.

When you ID what you want/need, go to Abe Books on the net. It is a tenticled organization of used book dealers throughout the US (and world). You can usually find anything in numismatics through them.

I think that are you get a broad sense of what circulated in early America you can then dive deeply into specific reference materials for each series, ex. Gilboy would be my favorite for Pillar denominations. British coppers will have a variety of writings, etc. I have also found that talking to guys like John K. and John Agre have been great to jump start a path for me personally.
