Is the Box of 20 collection obsolete?
Given that the new PCGS holders create issues getting 20 slabs into the old blue boxes (heck, given that the blue boxes themselves are supposed to disappear), do we now go to a box of 18 (since it appears it's the end slab slots that have issues holding the new slabs) or go to two boxes of 18 each?

With the way the coin market is (the prices have even fallen for some quality coins), I'm worried it will become a box of zero.
I could never limit myself to a box of 20! All of my boxes will hold 19 of the new holders!
Not a fan of the box of 20 as my style, but I tend to doubt that the concept is dead for those that prefer it...
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Certainly a decline in the number of people discussing the concept on coin forums in recent years. I doubt the concept will go away quickly, since there are many different types of collectors who value different things.
I don't adhere to the concept....but I have a feeling the "box of 20" is more of a philosophy than a method of accounting!
In other words, the goal is to acquire "a small number of high quality pieces". The number "20" may have been derived from the PCGS box....but I sincerely hope nobody is using it as the one and only REQUIREMENT!
In other words, If 16 works for you, stop at 16. If 25 makes sense, go for 25. The boxes aren't magical!
Hopefully PCGS (or ATS) will create new boxes so the Box of 20 PCGS slabs can live again!
It's a fun concept to think about, teaching discipline over hoarding, but overall overrated. If you have 19, 21 or another number, who really cares??
Box of 20 is so "yesterday." The only way to collect is the 20 boxes approach!
.
Im at the 10 box level with another 120 coins destine to be entombed. Over the last year Ive only added 5 coins to my collection, but have sent over 100 pieces in for grading, of those Ive kept the best quality pieces.
I do a "box of 20" concept. The maximum number of coins I allow myself to own is 20, at 11 right now. Once upon a time it was over 1000.
Between you and me, I keep them in an NGC box
I have a box of 20 and keep them in a pair of intercept shield double protection boxes.

I'm working on a box of 48.
A box of 40 [ 2 boxes of 20], and two boxes of 4.
Those are my three registry sets.

My interests are way too broad to be limited to 20 coins, tokens or medals. Heck, my political collection of tokens is a group of 500+ by its self.
To me the box of "20" is just a concept.
@BillJones You are entitled to a box of 2000 if you like

I am working on my new 50 box.... just deciding what to put in it... it will likely be gold... maybe a few special silvers....hmmmmm, maybe I need another 50 box now that I think of it.
Cheers, RickO
I want to do a Doily box of 20!
My YouTube Channel
Or Regency Slabs or NGC Black slabs!
PCGS should offer an EXCHANGE program since they are the ones who made tne new "too thick" slabs.

the concept was never "solete" for me in the first place. Sure, I could pick 20 or whatever number favorite coins and put 'em in a box, but as far as collecting a cohesive group of coins (a "set") some of my sets have more coins than 20 pieces, some fewer. Some are slabbed, some not. Some would generally be regarded as "nice coins for the grade", some not. etc etc.

If you wanted to have a limit, a full Safe Deposit BOX would be good to use.
Given the amount of space that slabs take up, that's not as many coins as it sounds. If you are collecting certified medals, you could fill a safe deposit box with ten or fewer pieces.
Mostly. But it's also got a few moderns in it, as well as a few medals.
