What? Coins rattling in the package? Surely you are pulling my lariat. How is the flip going? J/W

No flip. I don't play that game (at least not since the Buffalo C&C set came out in 2001; I sold three of those).

I just get one set of all the Mint commem issues as they come out as a collection. I generally just keep them in the original Mint packaging, and don't have them graded.

From what I've read here, the open plastic capsule during shipping has been a frequent problem, although It's only happened to me two or three times, and luckily the coins haven't appeared damaged.

Silver version on sale at noon tomorrow! I'm in for one each to go with the $5 Au's...

Proof Link: Mark Twain 2016 Proof Silver Dollar

Uncirc Link: Mark Twain 2016 Uncirculated Silver Dollar

    Mintage Limit: 350K

    No household limits.

The release was delayed 2.5 weeks by an error on the CoA. The silver was yanked so close to release date, that I'm sure they had the pre-struck coins packaged and ready to go, which means opening up every single package and replacing the CoA. How many error CoA's will make it into the wild? Will the TPG's slab the error CoA? Will they require the OGP be kept sealed so they can certify that the error CoA came with the coin? image

Hmmmm... The silver will get released Feb 1. The Mint's next sales figures (post Ag release) should be out by Feb 8 or 9, over a week until the FS/ER cut-off dates. (I assume. I got mine on Jan 19.) If the gold commems get a boost while still on backorder, I will ponder getting the gold slabbed. Should Au sales remain dismal without the MS version going to backorder, I may just download an MP3 of a toilet flushing instead. It would be a lot less expensive.

It's a good thing I bought these 'cause I like 'em... image

Still no official FS cut off date. Link Actuall, no 2016 dated coins have a date posted.

I called last week and was told "they" hadn't decide yet. I asked if it was possible a date could be decided that was prior, or back dated, to a date before it was posted. Example: Cut Off Date of February 1st posted on February 2nd. She didn't really have an answer.

    Time line so far:

Gold Mark Twain coins on sale 1/14

    First shipped 1/15

First received by customers and sent for grading 1/16

    First received by PCGS 1/17

    Population report posted here 1/23

No cut off date for FS posted or by phone query aprox 1/27

Normal cut off date would be 2/15-17 if precedent followed

The PCGS First Strike program designates coins issued in the first 30 days of the Mint's release. 30 days is mentioned several times in reference to a FS time frame.

Will the release of the Silver coins trigger a posted cut off date for both Gold and Silver? Will the the dates be the same? Or will the 30 day rule be observed, just late in posting the date?

There is an ER cutoff of 2/18 ATS.

If PCGS won't start the clock until the silver release, then my scenario would go ATS for an ER label...

Thanks for posting the gold sales. It will be interesting to see the silver sales with the delayed release. Though to be honest this series seems to have little interest here on the forum.

Still no FS cut off date for all 2016 new releases. What is going on in Newport Beach? That's some New Years hang over for you to still be so foggy.

Got the shipped notice email for the silver. This fulfillment company continues the trend of shipping the next day. Great job. image

It is interesting to note that those who waited to order the gold coins until the silver coins were released

to save on shipping costs are getting bit as the mint raised the price of the gold coins by $12.

The uncirculated gold coin on January 15 was $359 and today (February 2) it is $371.

But they get the $8 break on the free upgraded shipping! image (I'm still bitter I have to pay another $4.95 for smartpost. I'll get over it in an hour or two...)

Yes, all numis gold went up last Wednesday, which may help to nail the coffin on this series. A quick glance around other forums show the MT commem is as popular as rabies.

I wonder if the Monday release (the day after the weekly sales report) is equivalent to politicians dumping documents on Friday afternoon or just before holidays... image

The US Mint made a mistake in delaying the sale of the silver coins to supposedly correct literary mistakes in the certificates.

They should have just sold the coins with the "bad" certificates and created a minor numismatic oddity.

Later the mint could have mailed corrected certificates to purchasers.

I did purchase a silver proof and uncirculated dollar, but I always planned to.

    BWAhahahaha... Not unprecedented.

Maybe a month ago, I was cleaning out some desk drawers and came across a letter from the Treasury Department, and it held replacement CoA's for the 2003 silver proof sets I had ordered. The error CoA's show the dime and half to be nickel-copper clad, when it should have been 90% Ag.

I don't even remember requesting them, I think the mint just had them sent to all those who had ordered the silver set.

I never did find out how many sets were issued with the error CoA before it was discovered...

    Okay, maybe not... Per Coinworld:

The first day of sales Feb. 1 by the U.S. Mint registered total sales of just 11,500 coins.

They reported today that the figures released were incorrect...

U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White reported Feb. 3 that the opening day of sales generated sales of 23,900 Proof and 9,600 Uncirculated Mark Twain silver dollars. The individual totals are "rounded" and "unaudited," according to White. Another 4,600 Proof and 1,400 Uncirculated Mark Twain silver dollars were sold Feb. 2, White said.

    First-day comparisons for 2015 and 2014

In comparison, first-day sales for the 2015-P U.S. Marshals Service 225th anniversary silver dollar were 24,057 for the Proof dollar and 10,200 for the Uncirculated version. First-days sales equaled 6.9 percent of the maximum mintage of 500,000 coins.

The first day of sales for Proof and Uncirculated 2015 March of Dimes silver dollars reached a combined total of 24,376 coins. Mint officials reported 16,436 Proof 2015-W silver dollars sold and 7,940 of the 2015-P silver dollars sold. The combined total was 4.9 percent of the maximum combined authorization of 500,000 Proof and Uncirculated commemorative silver dollars.

For the 2014 National Baseball Hall of Fame silver dollar, during the first 12 hours of availability, sales totaled 108,164 of the Proof 2014-P silver dollars and 48,511 of the Uncirculated 2014-P silver dollars out of a combined 400,000 coins available (39.2 percent of the total). The maximum mintage sold out in less than two weeks.

Introductory sales of the 2014-P Civil Rights Act of 1964 silver dollars were lower than those for the Mark Twain silver dollar. The U.S. Mint registered preliminary sales figures from the first 12 hours at 6,600 single Proof coins and 3,073 Uncirculated coins of the 350,000 maximum combined mintage available (2.8 percent of the maximum).

So not as bad as originally reported...

Received my one each of the silver in the mail yesterday. They look perfect to my eye.....but I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other when it comes to predicting the grade to be receive.

Anyway, they are boxed up and on the way to the Post Office shortly.

Still no first strike cut off date for any 2016 dated coin posted on the FS page.

Mine aren't even scheduled to get there until Tuesday.

I hate smartpost. Takes a package from Dallas four days to get to me via smartpost, but 8 days from Memphis, which always spans a weekend.

For a logistics company, FedEx smartpost is FedEx'd up... (Can I say that here?)

That's fast for Stupid Post. It takes 20 days to get to me. It's the absolute worst way to ship. And what do they save? A few cents? Customer satisfaction be damned. Such poor decision making. I'll bet those in charge don't have to suffer Stupid Post. If they did.......

Silver Twain commems arrived today. The uncirc seems softly struck. It certainly could have benefited from a higher relief. Not sure if it's 70 material... image

The multi-density frosting on the proof isn't obtrusively noticeable, but it does effectively differentiate the river from the sky, for example, while still being able to isolate the prominent devices.

I think it looks better in hand that in the photos, but I still like the gold version better.

Yes -- for silver coins. Generally I can afford those as already-slabbed 70's.

But the premium for 70's gold & platinum can be too steep for me.

According to Coin World, the US Mint is distributing the proceeds for the 2016 Twain Commem.
Final Audited Sales (which differ from the Mint's weekly sales report):

    Gold Proof (16CH): 13,273
    Gold Uncirculated (16CJ): 5,699
    Total Gold Sales: 18,679

    Silver Proof (116CK): 78,503
    Silver Uncirculated (16CL): 26,270
    Total Silver Sales: 104,773

With a $35 surcharge for the gold, and a $10 surcharge for the silver, net surcharge after production and other related costs comes to $1,711,750 . This will be split four ways, with each recipient receiving $427,937.50. Those organizations are:

The Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, CT.
The Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hannibal, MO.
The University of California, Berkeley, CA.
    Elmira College, NY.

The law authorizing these coins can be found here: PUBLIC LAW 112–201

(Just as a final non-sequitur, in the computer world, TWAIN was the interface between imaging hardware (e.g. scanners) and software, and was generally recognized to be short for "Technology Without An Interesting Name".)

After decades there is still not much interest in gold , as much as there is in his writings

I am a major Twain fan, but had no interest in the coins.
