1944 Steel Cent on Pawn Stars last night.

It was a PCGS graded AU 58 and the old man who was trying to sell it wanted over $100k for it. Rick offered him $30k after his expert consulted auction records. Did you guys catch that episode? I thought it was cool.

Wow.... quite a comedown...... No counter offer? Would think the guy would counter at $75K. Cheers, RickO

He did counter at 75K, exactly, but Rick wouldn't budge past 30K.

it's going to take him $10,000 to sell it!

think of all the rehab... corrosion, replating, polishing. then the overhead!

I saw this. I cannot believe how staged it all was.

Interesting....Not sure what the value should be...not listed in the MegaRedbook...if he was concerned it was plated, then he should not have offered $30K,....Cheers, RickO

I remember hearing about this. Obviously staged, but I think one positive thing that came from this for those paying attention was that it is possible to check auction records to get values for some stuff.

I think it was actually "slabbed" AU-53.
It appeared to have some thin white streaks (zinc oxide) on the obverse and a few very light rust patches.

I saw this episode. The $100,000 price was way out of line. Rick's offer was closer to the true value given the auction results. And yes, this was staged, but it was still entertaining.

I liked Pawn stars in the beginning when it seemed less scripted. Of course, I always found it hard to believe someone would got to a pawn shop to sell a rare collectable.

Some people don't know any better, or they don't know any other buyers. Unfortunately the stories about how coin dealers have way under paid people who walked through their doors "cold turkey" with good material are so common that they have cast a negative image image among some in the numismatic industry.

30k was a fair offer...maybe even generous for PawnStars.
