Let's play: What would YOU bid?

I was the second under-bidder on this coin last night....and it was a bid quite a bit outside my "comfort zone"....but this might be a time when I wish I had bigger cajones. ![]()
For background:
- PCGS price guide for a VG 10 is $1800
- Great Collections has a 10% buyers premium...and there is no tax in CA (or your state?) above $1500.
Using whatever method you use, and whatever opinion you have of the coin.....What is your max bid, and why?

(I accidently posted too quickly! Was going to add another for "Higher than that"). ;/
Higher than that...
+1
On a coin like that probably higher. I voted 1800-1900. On some coins in certain series you can throw away the price guide.
When it come right down to it....it's how bad do you want the coin.
I added a reverse image for those who will undoubtedly ask...
this is a rock solid coin for the grade. The venue is great. You wont often buy this coin at guide pricing though.
If you want it maybe 2k or better as the series has a lot of competition. Got to step up if you want to buy it.
I am not a buyer but would of bid 2k to have a chance at buying it.
All I'll say is it looks better than my PCGS F15 that I paid more for.
For what it's worth...(which ain't much):
I'm in the "higher" camp with one notable issue. It's my money we are playing with.
I essentially ran up and beyond what I'm willing to pay for, well, anything! You might as well ask me what I'll play for an 1804 dollar. "Um...I'd stretch, and go about $1700".
Oh, I really wanted this coin. Really, really. I was praying for the clock to hurry while I was high bidder for awhile. Dang bank account!!!
Added:
Final bid ended up being $1885, or $2073.50 with the juice.
And....A F-12 in the same auction only ended at $1750, (non-CAC, and with a noticeable ding in front of the portrait).
That coin is exceedingly wholesome, and while it may not technically be undergraded, it is definitely premium quality.

I like everything about that coin
That is a awesome looking coin

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Flowing hair halves are hot right now so I'm not surprised you didn't get it. Not that mine compares to this one but I paid $1050 last year for it and I'm sure I could make an easy profit.
I voted in the higher range of your poll. This is a very nice VG10 that would sell for Fine money without question. The look, the OGH and the CAC sticker all add to the total value and liquidity of a piece like this. So if I were buying this for my collection, $2000 or a little more would not be out of the question.

That's a really nice coin, better than 10 IMHO.
Fwiw, I had an identical looking VG10 ogh back in Nov 2007, and it could even be the same coin. I sold it to Danny Lee of Stanford Coin and Bullion for $1575 at the CoinFest show. At that time VG's on CDN were around $750-$775....I paid $875 from a dealer. I was asking basically Fine money....and got it from SCB. Tried selling it on this forum for less money.... unsuccessfully. VF's at that time were around $2250-$2500.
Dumb ?? Without the holder to tell you so, how do you know that's a 50 cent piece?
Size. (Which, admittedly, is hard to judge from a photo).
But that's how they made 'em, and that's how you were supposed to know.
I didn't vote, but the combination of apparently mostly original surfaces, good eye appeal, rather pristine OGH and CAC sticker give this coin all the bells and whistles. As such, I would expect it to have sold for quite a bit more than an other equal, but generic (if you know what I mean) coin. Additionally, this coin should have terrific liquidity.

That coin looking that nice in that holder with that bean...
Nice coin with no problems. Just honest wear with great patina.

Yeah, that coin is primo for the grade range.
I like how @messydesk describes it as "exceedingly wholesome".
Sums it up for me.
I voted $1800-$1900 based on previous auction results, leaning towards the next higher grade results.
Edit: For spelling and how cool it is to see who voted and their selection.

Kinda what I thought, but was wondering if there were smoe other clues.
When you said price guide was 1800 and then showed the picture, I thought $2100 or so is what I'd bid.
Awesome coin, surpassingly liquid versus the average FH half in that grade range.

That coin is exactly how I like them. Great looking coin.
$2300 would have been my max (without BP) without hesitation.
OGH, green bean, best combo in town, and a gorgeous multiple levels of demand rare coin to boot. Can't get these wholesale.....
Best, SH
A very nice coin I'm just a cheep collector.
Hoard the keys.
The size/weight was one way to tell, but the denomination is marked on the coin... it's just on the edge and is marked FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR.

There's an answer I can identify with.
But there are some very nice higher graded one's coming up on stacks that I would pay $5K for.
Hoard the keys.
So I decided to look at GC to see what it sold for. $1885 bid, $2074 all in. In the same auction, there's a F12 that doesn't rise to the VG10 coin's level of wholesomeness, and sold for $1925. Study both coins, as there's a lesson to be learned about quality, and it's not just because of the holder or the sticker.

Said 18-19, but not really. It would be according to how the coin was being bid, as in high early, low until late, or right at price guide, as that would give me an idea of what is going to happen in the closing seconds. I would personally love that coin, but its not in my wheelhouse. I can see a collector of that series going higher than $1900 easily.

Out of my price range presently...I had to pass.
Nice coin!

I would pass because I now own and have owned better examples of that coin in the past. At that price level I could not hope to flip the coin for a profit.
Probably nine years ago, when was a dealer, I bought a coin like that, in very choice VG, for $1,300 at a show and flipped it to a collector for $1,500 at the same show. I think that Gray Sheet "bid" was only about $1,000 at the time.
if I wanted this, I would probably go to $2K
the obverse looks closer to a VG 12 and the reverse a VG 8
Pass - your bids were too high unless your the end user. My bid / offer assuming I wanted it for inventory no more than 1000.
I was too low... (1600-1700)...I have never bid on these... Nice old coin though..Cheers, RickO
Exactly what @illini420 said. Great presentation, problem-free Bust type half dollar with CAC on the high-end of the grade, and in an old holder.
Kind Regards,
George
I love that coin! I'd go 2K

This.......Some years ago, not as many as nine though, I bought this coin (very, very similar in appearance, also vg) for 12 beans......I think I flipped it at 14. I would have a hard time wrapping my head around 2 grand or something here.
That was a superb coin - a great example of why all coins graded the same are not the same in value.

What a wonderful looking coin. Over 220 years old and looking like an honest piece. If I was to pursue it - it would be a shame about the OGH - will result in higher price. In a normal holder you'd see a lower price. I voted for the highest range. I agree with davewesen. Pop is very high - so more than likely there are others out there.
You aren't going to get coins like that for "regular" money. One of the things I've had the hardest time getting comfortable with is "paying too much" for really nice coins. At sale time, the really nice ones sell themselves and usually for a profit, IME. I've made my biggest scores on things I "overpaid" for and the ones I got a nice deal on sometimes never sell, even at a discount.
Pay attention to what Rick Snow says about lower-quality coins dragging down price guides and market values.
Quality never goes out of style.
Mine, just for comparison. I think the coin in the OP has better eye appeal, but also substantially more wear:
I was happy with the outcome as both 1795s were mine. Thanks GC.
Well, I can tell you that I was happy to be the "owner" of this one....for a few hours....until I was outbid.
And I knew this tread would re-enforce my gut feeling that I should have put on my "big boy pants", and kept bidding. At the very least, I could have gotten you a few MORE bucks on it.
