I may have posted this when I received it awhile back but I;m asking your opinion on it again.
Its for my toned type set.......see link in my sig line.

The obverse (right side) is on the plastic not the coin.

    That coin like all 1921 peace dollars is weakly struck and few have outstanding eye appeal.
    That should fit well in your toned peace dollar set.

    I personally prefer this over an over-dipped white coin. Slight toning breaks on the obverse features (now white) give the appearance of rub. I would have graded it 63. Luster looks fine to me. The biggest distraction is the white high points....and that's not a huge problem imo. This is how they should look if left to the air for 50-95 years. Send this in enough times and I'd not be surprised if an AU58 popped up once. The kind of look PCGS really doesn't like. NGC is more realistic on these imo.

    Toning is neutral to positive to me, a C+/B- on color. Looks like 62 shot 63 and overall I like it.

    How's the luster in hand, Stef? From the image it sure looks lifeless. I don't really care for the toning much either, based on the image. Granted that well toned Peaces are rare, and this is better than most, I'd still call it a net negative. I hate to say this, but I think you can do better.

    It's easy to find toned 1921 Peace dollars. It's surprisingly difficult to find nicely toned ones. While you can probably do better it might take some looking. Keep in mind that the 21 tones differently than other Peace dollars.

    Big fan of the Peace dollar, but usually not this toned up. Finding a '21 with some nice color is difficult to come across, they're usually darker like this.

    Here's a darker one just like yours that I sent in this last spring. I thought it was an AU58, but PCGS thought different.

    I like it. Un-cleaned 1921 Peace Dollars seem to come somewhat darkly toned fairly often.

    Here is my 1921 Peace Dollar (formerly my Dad's). It is darker in-hand than the pictures indicate:

    The white spots where the toning was either rubbed, or perhaps was never there because envelope storage, makes this coin look an AU. You could have the same sort of "rub" on a white colored Mint State piece and never know it. I think that it is Mint State and if it were in an MS-63 holder, I would not object. The toning really falls more in the tarnish category, but if you are interested in coins with original surfaces, this is certainly an example of that.

    When I was a dealer I handled an PCGS graded piece that looked similar to this that was either graded MS-63 or 64, I forget which one. When I bought it, the dealer who sold it to me said, "Good luck selling that," which was an unusual comment to say the least, but it disappeared from my case in less than two months at my usual mark-up.

    There is a market for original pieces like this although it's not among the "monster toning" crowd. For those who know there is a lot more originality here than there is among the a fair number of the "monster toned" Peace Dollars, which have been helped IMO.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Thanks everyone for your opinions!! All brought up very good points.
    I originally liked it and still do and MICHAELDIXON ......you are right. You did sell me this one and it looks much
    better in hand. I think the 2 biggest things that will make me continue to look for another example is the weak strike
    and lack of toning on the higher points. As I said I still like it and its a great example of an unmolested Peace dollar,
    but I think I will continue my search and enjoy this one in the mean time.

    The strike on yours isn't perfect, but it is above average. Finding a well-struck, nicely toned example will be even tougher.

    The one in the OP hides the details of the coin - a negative for me. The other two examples in the thread are nice. The one graded 63 is definitely cool in my opinion.

    I happen to like the look of this coin. Many 21 Peace dollars exhibit this coffee-toning look. Your example also looks to have a decent strike for the year. I think it's a 58, but 63 wouldn't surprise me. That being said, for a "toning" set, I think you'll eventually find a more suitable replacement.
