Serious question about my set...

CommemKingCommemKing Posts: 2,202 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have a complete Early Commemorative Half Registry Set. They are currently in a sorts of holders. New, old, green, blue, doily, secure, you name it.

I kinda like all my coins to be in the same holder. I also want all of them trueviewed. PCGS has a special 30th anniversary label that they are offering on reholders.

Would you send them all in for secure plus so that they are all matching in slab? Its going to cost a lot but the uniformity might calm me down a bit. It just looks messy. Do you think it would add any value to have them all in the same secure holder and trueviwed?

it may very well reduce the value of your set. Some people pay more for old/green/blue/doily etc. I'd leave as is if value is the criterion

Given the state of the market overall, and commemorative collecting specifically, I would not put any additional money into the set unless you are upgrading a coin. The market is soft at present and commemoratives are downright DOA. It seems like a good time to buy upgrades if you still love collecting them. If the market firms and begins to heat up, you can send them in to have them all holdered sequentially with the same label and have a better return on the expenditure.

    Agree. Leave them.

if you like uniformity, you might also consider placing them in PCGS boxes according to slab style. That way, you open a box, all you see are "blue holders" or "doily holder" or whatever keeps you off the ledge.

Maybe I'm weird, but I like seeing all the different generations of PCGS holders together.
I'd definitely leave them alone. (as long as they're all PCGS)

No. In my opinion this would be an unwise use of money. Additionally, again in my opinion, it would add no money at all to the value and might actually decrease both the value and liquidity of the set.

Having Trueviews would be nice but that is the only benefit. My set is like yours----many different types of holders and I like that kind of diversity a lot. The older slabs are cool, collectible and add value. I would leave them alone.

Only you can answer this question. If they are all in PCGS holders that's good enough for me. I would reslabe any rattlers because I just don't like them. The rest I would leave alone.

Ya, I kinda jumped the gun there. After rethinking, I'm keeping them in their slabs. I wanted all trueviews. Instead I will get them photoed by a good photographer. I have some in mind. Thanks for the comments.

nice choice. Good photos will help you enjoy the coins more frequently...won't have to break them out of a safe/bank or from under the floorboards!

That's what I'd do. I enjoy a lot of my coins via good photos, its safe and convenient, and I hate to say it, some coins are easier to see. :#

And if I may, Todd Pollack, BlueCC photos, would be a great choice.

I would like to get TrueViews of some that I have in OGH but I like the green labels too much. To me it's become part of the coin's history as compared to others in PCGS slabs.

One thing that I (and I'm sure quite a few others) would like to see is PCGS allowing you to keep the existing label for a new holder. I never understood why they won't do that.

Good decision CommemKing.... the OCD can be bothersome, but overall, it is better to keep them 'as is'. Cheers, RickO

There are some very wise responses here. Older holders can be worth more.

To me this idea of having all the coins with the same style label is silly. When collections are sold, they are almost always broken up and sold as singles. The "same label" thing gives you no financial advantage.

Unless it's some sort of vanity thing that makes you happy for some reason, I wouldn't waste the money.

A set is only as good as it makes you feel whenever you look at it. If it makes you feel good having them in the same holders, I say go for it. Having been in the Army for 20+ years, I understand you wanting uniformity.

glad you are leaving them alone.
With the money you would have spent, you can get a very nice commem. or two
