    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible.     Unfortunately slabbing has made it impossible for many collectors to feel just how small and thin these coins are by holding one their hand. When you put one in your palm, it's like you hare holding nothing. They are almost paper thin. For that reason it is easy to see why the Philadelphia and probably the New Orleans mint has so much trouble with the planchet feeding function in their production process. This would have resulted in clash marks when there was no planchet in the gap between the dies.

    The minimum die clearance was also excessively narrow compared to other denominations, which also contributed to the likelihood of die clashing.

    I look at this coin and I think of the Republic of Texas. I realize the republic ceased to exist in 1846, but when I look at this beautiful coin, I think "Republic of Texas".
