I am certainly no expert but the misaligned mint mark gives me pause

I don't know anything about most Morgan VAMs....but I would recognize this one as something special for the 2 reasons you mentioned.

    Nice pick up.

    The perennial tailbar desireable.
  • It appears you were willing to pay a lot more than the $273 since you had the high bid 3x.
    I love the 3 P's: PB&J, PBR and PCGS.

Yes, had the bid at $300 and then thought I'd pay up to 325. But, it was in the cards to

    get it under $300.

Nice. Decent price for an 45. Might make 50 but I'd need to see it in hand. I recently cherrypicked a tailbar in a period sterling necklace bezel at long beach. I love the thing. To think it's been in a bezel for 100+ yrs

Ever pay more than face value for a coin in your collection?

Seller has tons of newly graded coins, cheap ones at that. Why didn't he have this one graded? That usually tips me off to a problem coin of course. If it is not, you did great!

i see this posted so much, i gotta finally respond.

tpgs are not the end-all, be-all. especially when turn around times are not optimal. i personally am not a fan of normal turn-around times and dont submit a lot of coins as such.

i sell, buy and see plenty of people that dont get stuff graded. including myself.

it is a wise question to ask. but it boggles my mind to think that is the only way one can proceed with a certain coin. sometimes yes, most of the time, not.

there is a lot i can say, not negative, that explains nit submitting coins others think should be.

it isnt like you just drop a bunch of coins in an envelope and send em off. it is a laborious and costly process. do you not recall all the threads about hiw to submit coins, the most basic and simple way? i still groan when getting a package out. what did i forget or mess up or what will they forget or mess up. well, i'll find out in a month or two. ugh.

having said that. i would have submitted more coins this year, than the previous 8 combined, if not for this unfortunate turn-around time debacle. i still would have/will sold more raw, than slabbed and done ok.

your point is valid about having a supposed recent submission and asking, why wasnt this one, or was it and cracked out.

    rant over. image

Looks like a pretty nice example of a tough date. Price would be a touch high if it were a standard issue coin. The VAM put's it into a whole nother catagory however.

As to why it's not graded: Seller did not know it was a tail bar until the bidding had begun and several

bidders asked her to do a BIN, including me. This prompted her to look again and then she saw the VAM

and just let it go to auction (she did change the title to add the tail bar). But, since bidding had already

begun I think a lot of folks just passed over it as the VAM was not mentioned at first.

Nice catch. I'm thinking it looks cleaned, hope not.

In hand and with a 4 power loupe I can see no cleaning. A bit of streaky

toning but will let PCGS decide next week.

I do worry when buying off ebay especially with darker toning....sometimes it hides problems but in this case I did make out very good.

    bob:)

Did post the TruView link but do not know how to post the TruView pic.
