Got a scarce slab today!

ashelandasheland Posts: 23,714 ✭✭✭✭✭
Anybody have an example? I recall having seen these before, but very seldom.
The coin itself is just meh. But I wanted the plastic! image

Another interesting thing to note, the obverse is very nice and has great luster, but the reverse is very dull and lifeless. It doesn't even look like a nice AU coin, but indeed has no wear and is not cleaned or tampered with. I'm guessing a very worn out die?

I'm curious about anyone's opinion about the reverse looking so different from the obverse.

And if anyone has an NGC 8 slab, please post it here! I'd like to see them. image

Probably just a die issue, like you said. The 1922 was produced in larger numbers than any other silver dollar in history. Other than a few Grants and other odds and ends, that's about all the Philly mint churned out that year. The other possibility is that it was stored in a way that allowed the reverse to tone heavily and was then dipped, leaving one nice side and one dull side.

Too lazy to look it up right now but weren't these produced just for two months or so (seems like it was around the time of 9/11)

I bought a number of coins at that time with those holders. And I disliked them. The bar code is the focal point. The serial number is an after thought.

In retrospect, when I closed the shop in 2003, we had spent about 6 months buying BOXES of BU Peace dollars from a lady who had amassed them with her late husband.

At the time...... Peace Dollars were...... junk.

But these were brand spanking new.

    Ohhh.....

And we had already bought the dozens and dozens of BU rolls of Morgans.

    ohhhh......

I really like these as well and they are quite scarce. More scarce are those who collect them. They were produced for a very short period. According to Conder101's reference, they were made only during August 2000.

    Nice find.

Yup, just a month and then they went back to NGC7 as NGC8.1.

Note that Conder's book says 7 and 8.1 are the same but his post says he was told that the hologram was slightly different in size. By my measurements there is no difference.

Since I am not a slab collector, I rarely notice anything about them.... perhaps some significant differences like doilies and OGH.... I will have to check my NGC slabs...may well have a couple of these. Cheers, RickO
