So... Would Ya?

BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
I bought something that arrived far better then expected and I'm thrilled. During the negotiation the seller and I had been 6% apart on what she really wanted. I offered up everything I had in my PayPal account and she accepted even taking my last 2 cents I mentioned in jest if it would make a difference. Now here and my account flush again I'm considering sending the seller the additional amount she really wanted. So would you out of the goodness of your heart pay more post deal?

    Thanks so true! image

It's been on my mind since it arrived yesterday and sending the payment is on my list of things to do this morning.

You both agreed on a price and completed the transaction.

If I was thinking strategically toward a seller who I hoped to establish a long relationship with and knew they had other good material, I'd think about a little extra as a thank you.

Nah. You'll just make them wonder why you're paying more and think they got ripped off

From a collector selling a coin to upgrade or because they needed the cash... yes.

    From a dealer... no.

You took the risk. What if it would have arrived way worse? Would you get money back?

Budget constraints prevent me from paying more, post deal. I cannot purchase what I cannot afford in the first place, unless there's a profit to be made. But this is from a "dealer's perspective", not a collector. I'm speaking to coins. As a collector, yes , of course I would pay more if I made a "cut to the bone" deal and really liked it upon receipt. Most assuredly.
  • BroadstruckBroadstruck Posts: 30,497 ✭✭✭✭✭
From a collector and more likely just a one time deal with no follow ups.

I did take a risk as I couldn't fully see what I was buying.

The number one negotiation practice is knowing when to just walk away.

So I wasn't eager to offer any more then I did.

Now here on a bad day it's worth nearly 3 times what I paid wholesale.

IF you do this you must : Never attempt to make lower offers again. Repay ALL the other sellers you have lowballed over the years. If you don't want to do those things, forget the thought and move on.

To me it would depend on the seller.

Collector or inheritor who is just trying to raise funds (whether for emergency or estate). Yeah, I probably would.

One off dealer who makes a business of buying and selling. Nah.

Dealer who I have long, quality relationship with? I'd probably at least reach out and let them know.

Every deal won't work out even. So long as both parties profit I'm not especially concerned who made out better. Anytime I get more than I expect or pay less than full value I'll just raise my bids and pay more for everything from that seller until we're even again. Most people prefer repeat business and relationships more than getting full price out of everything they offer anyway.

Just don't let yourself get too far ahead or behind with someone because you might never be able to even out.

I would not, but I would be more likely to make another purchase from the dealer if they didn't come off the price of the next deal as much as I'd like.

No, You took the risk and it would only raise suspicions.

If you really feel compelled, then buy something from her again and pay her the full asking price or closer to retail.

This one's a done deal imho.

So would you out of the goodness of your heart pay more post deal?

You were thrilled with your purchase. Why not if you have the ability to pay a bit more, more like the amount the seller was asking for?

I sent the payment along with a nice note showing appreciation well over an hour ago.

I feel good about having done it now, already thought about it yesterday, and doubt I'll feel any different a few years down the road.

I don't surf the web for things to flip just items for me.

I'm not seeing much these days I want or especially to pay up for, however this is something I would have handsomely had I seen it in hand.

When the day comes to sell I'll still do well even with the additional nominal percentage now paid.

Felling warm & fuzzy right now and not the slightest bit foolish.

However you can all weigh my decision any way you want?

    Thanks! image

  • Definitely not. It might make you feel good but it will probably not make them feel good. It will work for the seller's benefit in the future naturally when you choose to do more business with them

Is it graded? Is she knowledgeable on the subject? If it was a somewhat level playing field and a graded coin than no. If it was ungraded and she grossly under graded the coin than sure.

I agree with TDN on this one. Your thread indicates that your heart is in the right place, but if you feel you simply must do something, send her an ounce of silver or a Morgan slick. Just paying more will make her suspicious.

I agree that you did good. If we don't do what makes us feel good (as long as it's not at the expense of another) we will be dependent on others for that. I also liked the recommendation to "pay it forward" mentioned by thebigeng and the karma idea. But you have already made your decision and should be pleased with it.

Without knowing the coin, the condition or anything associated with the transaction, it seems tough to play Monday morning QB or be the moral compass in connection with EBay transactions. One approach would be to just look for other items offered by the Same seller and find something to purchase.

One thing that I have done in buying coins is to select coins that I Like that are priced fairly and buy them. While some will say this makes me a chump, I think it demonstrates a sense of fairness that leads to the ability to strike a deal on those coins where the difference is the 6 percent described in this thread

After reading the responses in this thread, I have a better understanding now why I've never been financially successful in numismatics image I guess I'm just an idiot collector who believes in the tenet "do unto others as you would have done to you". You can't put a price on that.

Broadstruck, I commend you for a kind gesture that I believe will pay you back tenfold. The very fact that you thought to do such a kind thing in the first place speaks volumes about your character. I've done similar things in the past and ALWAYS have felt that I came out way ahead in the deal in ways that $$ can't buy. Good for you! image

I imagine that you feel better today than you would have had you taken that amount of money and bought yourself a steak dinner last night. Bryce is right, no good deed goes unpunished. But if you are not willing to pay a price for who you want to be, then you will pay another price for being who you are.
