Baltimore show report

I attended today's show oblivious to the prospect of the 'Day of Rage', but the mood was set for the day as some of the collectors in-line worried aloud about the possibility of civil unrest later in the day. Show was closing early, and without much fact, all that was known by many was 'some sort of protest that shuts things down early'. And even if the protest was a hoax and many dealers said they planned to stay, the mood of the show was pretty much ruined IMO. I saw many empty tables, and many tables being packed up by 11AM. Dealers that are big buyers had stopped buying. Business was being conducted in a hurried pace, and all gave the impression of making last minute preparations before something awful.

All that said I had a very productive show in about two hours time. I've gotten in the habit of standing in line so I can get directly to the PCGS table, having on another occasion lost nearly an hour standing in line waiting to do a submission. I dropped off six buffalo nickels to PCGS using regular submission - hope to have results before September. Dropped off two coins for consignment at Great Collections - was hoping to have more time to speak with Ian but everyone appeared to want to head out for the day. Did a show-and-tell with Ed Rodriguez (Cape), including two colorful buffalo's I thought I would be hopelessly buried in, but one call later a happy buyer had my two buffs and I got out of them whole. I looked at a couple of Angel Dee coins for a board member who wanted them viewed in hand, and prepared my notes accordingly. Stopped by to say high to Garrow King (Yellowjacket) and worked out a nice trade for two of my wheat cents for three of his. Total expenditures on coins for the day was $33.

All-in-all I had a very productive show, and got in and out having to do what I wanted to do. While the protest was a hoax, there is no denying the possibility put a dark cloud over the show, no matter what brave face is put on it. Usually these are 'daddy's day out' for me, including a lunch in the inner harbor and maybe a beer over lunch, then returning to show to linger and consider items I had seen earlier in the day, but today it was all about getting my business done and getting out.

Too bad about the atmosphere at the show. People are getting more and more nuts now.

But it still sounds like you enjoyed it and that's the way it is supposed to be. image

Was there a protest of any sort?

The show was productive and ending early today turned out to be truly a blessing...

Since it saved me that extra hour of normally being stuck bumper to bumper in rush hour traffic when leaving this show.

A very accurate report! I got there at 10 and was thinking about leaving at 12 because of the vibe, people already packing up. I did get some things accomplished, however, and found a couple of goodies. Next show I'm sure will be better.

Nice report - sorry to hear about the somber mood, but glad you got some buffalo nickel stuff accomplished!

After reading this, I would be glad I didn't go, which I am.

Thanks for the report. When the insurance company that many use said that riots are not covered, many took the rumor of a protest very seriously. There was no protest. Not even a small one. In a situation like this a smart buyer will take advantage and scoop up some better deals than normal.
