First 1850's S mint Seated half for my collection

I plow through various auctions and do see the 1850's S mints off and on, but many seem to have problems. I almost never see the 55-S and have seen the others off and on, but usually miss out since the prices almost always exceed the guide. The 58-S and 59-S are supposed to be the 'common' dates, but I find that pretty humorous.



Anyway, here's a 'common' 58-S in a grade (PCGS XF-40) and price I really liked. It would be nice to find the other 50's S mints like this too!

    The 58-s has a pretty hefty mintage for a "rare" S mint with nearly 1/2 MILL. Still, finding them with choice surfaces like your coin is quite challenging. The 58-s and 59-s have 3X to 4X the mintage of the 55-s so one should expect to see them a lot more often. The 55-s was a sleeper even back in the early 1970's, especially in strong VF and better. The price guides had it under-priced for years....while the 58-s and 59-s tended to be a bit over-priced.

    That's a beauty.
    I got a little group, including the '56, '57 and '58 in 35/40.
    The only '55s I see are low grade and not wholesome.
    Probably worth the search if one matching your '58 can be found.
    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

    I must have missed this thread last week. That's a nice, original 1858-S. I have two of this date in my collection, an AU55 that has some contact marks in the reverse field (from Lynn Ourso) and an AU58 that has original toning, but also has plenty of hairlines from an old cleaning. The funny thing about 1858-S is that it was not considered much of a better date back in 2000-2003 when I started buying Seated halves. They were always available in XF-AU at Baltimore shows, and they didn't cost much more than a common date. I passed on many of them because I didn't see them as a tough date in the series. I sold a decent AU that had been dipped somewhere around 2003 and I think I got all of $75 for it. Now I don't have an example without some kind of problem, and I virtually never see them for sale. That's what happens when a series increases dramatically in popularity like Seated halves did the past 5-10 years.
