Awesome find in the junk silver box today.

luckybucksluckybucks Posts: 1,318 ✭✭✭
I picked up some 1930's era "junk" silver Washingtons.

Someone at the shop did not pay attention, and I managed to snag a 1932S in fine condition for just $3.50 !!

There was also a mid grade 1936D in there I picked up.

Not a bad day at all !!

Wow was fate smiling on you. I guess it does pay to go to a shop and look around.....

I am surprised someone would throw 1930's Wash 25c in JB unless AG or damaged. These are nice high demand retail collector coins not something I would sell near melt. How in the world does somebody miss that.....

There were LOTS of 1930's Washingtons in there, some slicks, but some as high as EF.

I pulled some 1932, 34, and 35's in EF out of there, as well as the 1936D in low end VF. My kinda junk :c)

This is not the first time I have pulled rare coins from that shop's junk bin. Same thing on the paper money side. They just don't pay attention to what they are putting in the junk.

They also have been known to throw 1923S through 1933S Walkers in the junk bins, and even 1917 D and S OBV mint marks.

CHECK YOUR JUNK BINS FOR TREASURES !!

Wow!!! I had an almost identical experience about a year ago. I came across a junk box that I pulled out (12) '30's Washington Quarters. A 1932-S which I'd put at VF, a 1936-D that is at XF45-AU50, a couple of BU 1936-S and the rest BU 1935-S. I paid 15X face for the lot.. I wish I had know more about varieties then, based on what was in there, there were probably some other nice stuff I missed.

A long long time ago I was told it's called seeding. Gets collectors to come back and may
    buy something more besides junk.

Geesh! I've never collected silver in my life and even I know that the 32-D and 32-S Washington qtrs are keys.

Sounds like some "heir" emptied dads blue Whitman folders and dumped them all. Brutal.

Nice catch! Probably, the same people that left that in the junk are the same people that leave silver or other monies in the return bin in the CoinStar machine?image

Just as a WAG, perhaps the shop bought in a Whitman album with a duplicate 32-S in the wrong slot, and after picking out the 32-D&S in the right slots dumped everything else in the junk bin.

Your experience may be the wave of the future.

Most B&M dealers I speak with say all coins but the top 5% or so are absolutely dead.

There are trays and trays of 2x2s filled with coins that will never bring anything close to "book".

Bullion content plus a premium for only the top 3-5 grades.

Rest just seat in trays moving with bullion price if applicable.

I was at a large coin show in the Dallas area, and was looking in the foreign junk box, a huge thing, 25 cents, 5 for $1. I would doubt 1 person could move it easily. Anyway, I am plowing through it, looking for old large 1800's coins to use for the Boy Scouts. I find a Barber Dime, then another, then some Sitting Liberty Dimes and some quarters, and some Barber Quarters. The more I dug, the more I found. Probably 20 - 25 US silver coins, maybe more, plus some nice old 1800's coins, and a couple medium to large older foreign silvers. Paid my money, and also told a dealer who specialized in foreign coins that there may be some good stuff in the box. He checked it out, and gave me a Seated Liberty Half he found.

I was told the same years ago as well. Couple of years ago a friend who was buying into the hot silver market purchased a sum of warnicks. In the order was seeded a 50-D Jeff. and a few Buffs. Hard to miss those in a silver only nickel bag,of course that was the idea.
