eBay says it's fraud and PP says ship it out

I sold a coin on eBay for $1350. Then

1) I get an email from PayPal saying they are reviewing the transaction.

2) Then I get an email from eBay saying
We had to cancel bids and purchases on the following item(s) for the buyer, xxxxxxxx, because they were made without the account owner's permission:
Please note that we're working with the account owner to prevent any additional unauthorized activity.

3) Then PP sends an email saying their review is complete and it is OK to ship and Seller Protection is enabled.

So I call PP and they say everything is fine and to ship it. I get transferred to eBay who also says to ship it.

I explain they sent an email saying it was done without the account owners permission, so she puts me on hold to get a supervisor, who eventually says don't ship and to cancel the transaction.

Contact the buyer. The first eBay message suggests that the true account owner is now aware of the issue. If the account owner says to ship, ship.

I was also dealing with a hacked Ebay account. This is becoming a very familiar story. The bad part of it was Ebay didn't discover it - I had to tell them about it.

Every day I become more convinced that staying away from ebay is a great decision. Cheers, RickO

I bought and sold 100s of coins in eBay, but none in the last 4 years.

I continue to get coupons and special offers but resist.
    It's not worth the hassle.

I prefer to buy and sell at shows.

Ship nothing until you contact the true account owner and find out what's going on.
If you can't make contact or don't get a response then cancel everything and refund.

I would cancel the order regardless based on what has already transpired.

eBay cancelled the order, so you and the buyer are no longer protected by eBay or otherwise obligated to eBay.

PayPal, says it is OK to ship. And therefore, you are covered by their seller protection. If they tell you shipping is OK. You are covered.

But if you want to make really sure everything is copasetic, contact the buyer, cancel that transaction in PayPal, and then send them an invoice directly (assuming it is not fraud and they really still want the coin). If they agree to pay that and PayPal tells you it is "OK to ship" it becomes like any other direct PayPal transaction.

Wonder if what you are seeing is probably a technological snafu due to the transition of the divestiture of PayPal from eBay. They are two separate companies now, and frankly I trust PayPal Way more than I do EBay.

You sure seem to have problems on eBay. I remember asking you several times for your ID so that I don't accidentally buy anything! image

I see no fraudulence, in the interim.

I long for the old days when eBay was strictly an auction outlet, every auction lasted seven days, and payment was made by cashiers check or postal money orders.

It was fun, sellers' costs were low (as low as 2.5% if my memory serves), and there was no such thing as Paypal.

    And then eBay got greedy...

Yes there was....it was called bidpay, if my memory serves me right. PayPal has been a "money changer." No more waiting to receive a check nor waiting for it to clear. Buyer or Seller protection was unheard off. I've been an eBay seller since 2000, and you can have the good ole days.

I would refund the payment, and message them why. Then possibly block the account. You should be protected from negatives because ebay canceled the sale. I would NOT ship.

Their original service was called Billpoint. Bidpay was a short lived competitor of Paypal.
And frankly I liked the old days of Ebay just fine. I didn't mind waiting for a check or MO to clear and neither did my customers. I could buy and sell in a level playing field without sport bidders using me for a free approval service. I also didn't have to worry about feedback extortion attempts from buyers because I could leave honest feedback about the deal- compared to today's choices of leaving a positive or nothing at all. FB means nothing to a buyer now.

I used to do a reasonable amount of eBay selling to dispose of duplicates, but for the most part (depending on the coin), I think I'm becoming a loyal GC seller. You send them stuff. They do all the work. Their cut isn't much different than eBay, or even less when you figure out the time of photography, listing, etc, and they send a check in the mail in a very reasonable amount of time. Easy as pie, and the results of my first try with them were quite satisfactory.

The check doesn't bounce, there isn't any drama, and they answer the phone when I call. I never did enough business with the other guys to justify having a "store" or qualifying for discounted fees. Tell me why exactly I'd chose to stick with the company in the OP's title?

Agreed. I didn't mind waiting for a check either. I wasn't aware of Billpoint because eBay gave the seller the OPTION of using it, which I didn't.

I was furious when eBay began to REQUIRE sellers to accept PayPal (which they owned, of course, or vice-versa). What a crock -- just an excuse to charge more and more fees, which have continued to go up.

I joined eBay in 1998 and it was great for about the first five years... a great conduit for collectors to buy and sell coins to each other while bypassing the dealers. Everyone was on a level playing field...

Sure, give me a time machine to go back to those days anytime... I built a great collection, made lots of collector friends, and never once had a dishonest transaction.

I wouldn't use eBay in the form it's in now if you paid me.

I'm with ErrorOnCoins with this. It's still a venue to contend with. I haven't tried selling coins through Amazon, though it obviously works, too. Any venue for selling coins is a good venue. I'd prefer the circuit, the hot dogs, mustard, onions and enjoying the fellows & ladies at the tables , in truth.

I average 14 sale transactions a day on ebay, no issues.

    Been on for 15 years.

I guess 50 year old exhaust manifolds are not a big theft and fraud item.

Crazy! Sounds like I would NOT be shipping that item.

eBay pulled the listing when they canceled it, but it still shows under my Sold items.

So I canceled it again, which triggered PayPal to issue a refund.

I have the coin and whoever paid for it has their money back.

The wonder of the Internet lets me interface with people I wouldn't normally have contact with, so they are easy to dismiss.

I'm not going to contact someone who said the purchase was not authorized to see if they want to buy it again.

Funny, although somewhat curious given this hobby's continued fixation on designs that are a hundred years old or more. Small wonder the Mint keeps milking the collector base with countless reissues of these antique designs.

Talk about a "time machine" mentality... wonder when this hobby will extract itself from its time machine and step into the 21st century?
