Show me the money or show me the fun...

Hi guy's, I'm curious. Is there anybody out there when first joining this hobby, thought of making a profit? I certainly didn't. I joined for the fun of collecting beautiful and interesting coins. Just as a kid, when first starting to collect baseball cards. I only thought of the fun and the interest of the players and their stats. Never the money! To note, I wasn't that young at collecting baseball cards either. All I know is that if I never sold one item in my collection, today I would have a huge quantity of sets, coins and slabs. I mean, HUGE! It's funny how everything that starts out just to be fun, turns into a business. EX: All sports and other things... Just curious. Thanksimage

I didn't start with the idea of taking a loss, so yes

Never considered making money until I was 40 years into the hobby. Then when I needed to find a huge down payment they sure came in handy!

Still do it for the fun but if push comes to shove then off they go.

I buy and sell so I can afford better coins for my box of 20

I also buy and sell to "support" my habit. I buy what I like, then if I get an offer for a decent profit, I take it.

I enjoy the buying and selling part of coin collecting a lot. That's what makes it fun for me. The chance for the big score. Once you hit it big with a coin, it is quite addicting to try and do it again and again.

I've said many times.............If you don't sell things from time to time you'e never going to understand what a great deal when it crosses your path.
If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

I collect... do not sell.... and I enjoy my coins... makes for some pleasant 'bad weather' days.

    Cheers, RickO
  • I never thought of profit until my $33 silver eagles hit $1,000 ea. And I had a box of them and babies with 2 feet.

I thought of making a profit, but then reality raised its ugly head.
