New Purchases ( Grades Added)

ironmanl63ironmanl63 Posts: 1,972 ✭✭✭✭✭
A few new purchases. Looking for opinions and guess the grade.

The grades are!

MS62

MS62 OGH

MS64+ CAC green bean

I am still learning how to shoot coins. My photos show every mark in great detail. The coins in hand look better than the photos. I am sure with different lighting or lighting angles a lot of those marks would not show. Thanks for the opinions and grade guesses!

I'll guess 60, 58, 62. I like the color and patina on these, the eagle is really attractive IMO.

I'll say 60, 63, 62 for the fun of it. Really attractive coins, regardless of the numerical grade.

Grades added to the original post. The 1911 in an OGH looks like it would upgrade if resubmitted. I am starting to really like Gold with nice color and eye appeal. My main focus for a lot of years was Indian Cents in the same vain.

    MS62

    MS62 OGH

    MS64+ CAC green bean

If those are the actual grades, I could see them all downgrading 1 pt. I'd grade them 61, 58/61, 63+/ave 64. Most generic gold has been heavily resubmitted.

I agree. I do not see the last as a 64 unless the photo is to blame. Here is a 64+ for reference:

They are the actual grades! I thought about making up higher grades but decided that would be of no benefit to me! LOL I appreciate your honest opinions. My photos do not do these coins any favors. The color is there but the marks seem to be accentuated. These were all purchased in the last stacks auction. I will try to figure out how to post links to the auctions for proof.
  • jonrunsjonruns Posts: 1,196 ✭✭✭✭✭
What was the lot number of the Indian Eagle in the Stacks auction...we can check it that way!!!!

  • LanLordLanLord Posts: 11,712 ✭✭✭✭✭
I really like that 1911 eagle.

It just occured to me what an epic design that would have been as a one year no stars design in 1907.

  • ironmanl63ironmanl63 Posts: 1,972 ✭✭✭✭✭
    The lot numbers are

    1892 - 14130

    1896-S - 14132

    1911 - 35625

I am curious if it is my photos that give roadrunner and boosibri reasons to doubt the grades of these coins. I shoot all my coins myself. Even the ones I plan to sell. If the photos are a turnoff that is not good for me! I just started to photo gold any tips from the pros?
  • jonrunsjonruns Posts: 1,196 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Yes those are the grades...

    LOT DESCRIPTION
1892 Liberty Half Eagle. MS-64+ (PCGS). CAC.
An exquisite piece that exhibits vivid pink and pale rose highlights to otherwise orange-gold surfaces. Sharply struck with billowy satin luster, this is an uncommonly well preserved and exceptionally attractive coin in an 1892 half eagle.
    PCGS# 8379. NGC ID: 25Y6.

I never questioned that you were telling the truth, just expressing an opinion relative to the assigned grade as Roadrunner pointed out.
  • jonrunsjonruns Posts: 1,196 ✭✭✭✭✭
Ironman -- actually I think YOUR photos are better than those in the Stacks-Bowers catalog...perhaps one of the things that is throwing people off is the size of your photos is larger...which shows every imperfection...also a couple of those scratches might be on the holder not the coin...

The photo on the left is Stacks-Bowers...the one on the right is yours...

Good point that many folks who try to post images don't seem to appreciate: do not make your pictures too large. Sharpness and clarity are important, but NOT oversized unless you are trying to emphasize a die marker. IMO, a picture between 250x250px to 500x500px (per side) is usually appropriate, depending on the coin. Any bigger and it's like looking at Kate Upton through a microscope -- what's the point, right?

In any case, grades emphasize luster over marks, so no need to accentuate the marks because that mis-leads on the grade.

That is very true. When you blow the pictures up it really magnifies the marks and makes them more prevalent than looking at a coin in hand. Even thru a glass the marks do not pop as much as a supersized photo. Thanks for that perspective!
